Amid ‘Mr & Mrs Mahi’ release, a look at Janhvi Kapoor’s method dressing for promoting the film.

Method dressing in the world of entertainment refers to the strategic use of clothing and style to embody and promote the themes, characters, and narratives of films and shows. Method dressing, a rising fashion approach, happens when an actor or actress selects their outfits to represent their project’s aesthetic and their own character and channel them into their red carpet or promotional looks. This particular concept comes from the acting technique known as method acting. By curating outfits that reflect the essence of a character, method dressing enhances both on-screen storytelling and off-screen promotions. It also creates more buzz surrounding a particular project.

On-screen, designs and costumes ensure that characters’ wardrobes are authentic and contribute meaningfully to the storytelling. Their attires are meticulously chosen to reflect the time period, personality, socioeconomic status, and emotional state of the characters. This level of detail helps in creating a believable and engaging narrative.

Off-screen, method dressing is utilised during promotional events, interviews, and public appearances, where actors wear outfits inspired by the film or show. At red carpet events, celebrities often wear outfits inspired by their characters or the project’s theme, generating visual continuity between the film and the promotional activities.

Building brand identity is another crucial aspect of method dressing. By maintaining a consistent visual style across all promotional platforms, from posters to social media campaigns, method dressing helps in establishing a strong, recognisable brand for the film or show. This approach can extend into merchandising opportunities, with fashion lines or collections inspired by the characters’ wardrobes.

Social media engagement also plays a role, with actors and influencers sharing behind-the-scenes looks and fashion inspiration from the sets, engaging fans with content that feels exclusive and personal.

Beyond its promotional benefits, method dressing has broader implications, including influencing fashion trends. Films and shows often set new fashion trends, and when actors embrace method dressing in their promotional appearances, it can influence public fashion choices. Iconic styles from popular shows and movies frequently translate into mainstream fashion trends, impacting the fashion industry. Moreover, method dressing can highlight and celebrate specific cultures and historical periods, promoting cultural appreciation and awareness globally.

One of the most notable stars to use method dressing in Bollywood is Ranveer Singh. Known for his eclectic fashion sense, Ranveer Singh took method dressing to new heights during the promotions of ‘Padmaavat’. He dressed in outfits inspired by his character Alauddin Khilji, projecting a regal and fierce image like his on-screen persona.

Similarly, Deepika Padukone, during the promotions of ‘Chennai Express’, wore traditional South Indian attires, reflecting her character.

Alia Bhatt also adopted the method dressing trend for the promotions of her film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. By choosing simple and elegant white sarees that resonated with her character, Alia Bhatt nailed method dressing.

Kangana Ranaut, for the promotions of ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’, wore traditional sarees and warrior-inspired outfits, emphasising the historical and powerful nature of her character.

Recently, Janhvi Kapoor also embraced method dressing while promoting her new Hindi movie ‘Mr & Mrs Mahi’, co-starring Rajkummar Rao.

While speaking about who inspired her to embrace method dressing during the promotions of her film, Janhvi Kapoor named Zendaya. Janhvi Kapoor had taken to her Instagram Stories to admit that she was “heavily inspired” by Zendaya’s look during the promotions of ‘Dune 2’ and ‘Challengers’ and tried to follow that for her own film as well.

In a recent AMA session on her IG Stories, a fan asked Janhvi, “Is it true that you’re copying Zendaya?” Replying to this, she said, “Yes, I think I am very heavily inspired by what she did for her Challengers and Dune promotions. And not just her, even Uorfi. How creative she is with her fashion. I feel like as actors we all are encouraged to kind of do method dressing or dress similar to your characters while promoting a film.”

She added, “I haven't really done it except for Dhadak but when I saw her doing it so well, dressed up in accordance to the theme of the film… I realised that as actors there is a good amount of attention put on how we look and how we dress, and if I can use that to bring attention back to my film then why not?”

“Mother Zendaya showed us the way. She showed us how to do it really well. So yes, definitely inspired by that and just hoping to follow her footsteps,” she concluded.

As Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Mr And Mrs Mahi’ released in theatres on Friday, we decided to take a look at Janhvi’s various outfits, embracing method dressing, for the promotions of the film.
