The industry which was struggling to give box office hits for two-three years, came roaring back, and several movies such as 'Pathaan', 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar', 'Zara Hatke Zara Bachke', 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani', '12th Fail', 'Gadar 2', 'OMG 2', 'Jawan', 'Tiger 3', and 'Animal' tasted massive success at the box office. However, 2023 also brought its fair share of controversies for Bollywood and B-town was left buzzing with activity in 2023.

1. Ranbir Kapoor's "wipe it off" comment on Alia Bhatt
Alia Bhatt sent the internet into a meltdown after she revealed that her husband Ranbir Kapoor does not like her wearing lipstick as he likes the natural colour of her lips. Alia Bhatt made this revelation during a lipstick application tutorial. “When we used to go out at night, he (Ranbir Kapoor) is like wipe that off because he loves the natural colour of my lips," said Alia Bhatt.
As soon as the video went viral, the internet started calling Ranbir Kapoor as a "red flag" and "toxic". However, during her appearance on 'Koffee With Karan', Alia Bhatt said that neither Ranbir or her, care too much about the trolls and they are aware that some people just take things out of context.
2. Deepika Padukone's comments about her relationship with Ranveer Singh on 'Koffee With Karan 8'
The season premiere episode of 'KWK 8' hosted by Karan Johar, saw couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone making an appearance. The revelations made by Deepika stirred quite a controversy. Deepika revealed that she was seeing other men while dating Ranveer, but this all stopped as soon as she tied the knot with the actor. When one saw the episode, nobody could anticipate that it would create any backlash, however, trolls on the internet had other plans, and the criticism of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone went on for weeks.
3. Adipurush debacle
'Adipurush' directed by Om Raut, starring Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon and Sunny Singh, was touted to be a grand retelling of the epic Ramayana. However, the film turned out to be a damp squib and the film was severely criticised for playing with the emotions of the audience. 'Adipurush' also faced backlash for its dialogues and poor VFX. The writer Manoj Munatashir Shukla revealed that he had to leave the country as he started receiving death threats.
4. Nawazuddin Siddiqui-Avneet Kaur kiss in 'Tiku Weds Sheru'
'Tiku Weds Sheru', which was produced by Kangana Ranaut, was bashed severely for casting Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur who have a massive age difference. In the film, Nawazuddin Siddiqui's character shares a kiss with Avneet Kaur's character and the netizens were just not able to digest this. For the unversed, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is 49 years old while Avneet Kaur is just 21 years old. Netizens said that Avneet Kaur can easily pass off as Nawazuddin's daughter so why there was need on the part of the makers to show a kiss.
5. Sandeep Reddy Vanga's 'Animal'
Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s 'Animal', starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, and Bobby Deol is in the eye of the storm. Many people have bashed the movie's portrayal of toxic masculinity, misogyny, chauvinistic approach, unnecessary violence, and poor treatment of women. Despite grossing more than Rs 500 crore in India, the movie continues to receive a lot of flak. Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga called critics of his film as "illiterate" and "uneducated", and the filmmaker is now being bashed severely.
