Oscars 2024: Malayalam survival drama, '2018', starring Tovino Thomas has been selected as India's official entry.

Malayalam survival drama '2018', starring Tovino Thomas has been selected as India's official entry for Oscars 2024. The film has been selected by Film Federation of India for the upcoming Academy Awards. For the unversed, '2018' features an ensemble cast and it is based on the floods that hampered Kerala in 2018. '2018' has been directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, and he only wrote the screenplay with Akhil P Dharmajan. Apart from Tovino Thomas, the Malayalam film also stars Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Narain and Lal.

The Malayalam film grossed over Rs 200 crore at the box office, and it emerged as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all-time.

Previously, films like 'Gully Boy', 'The Last Show, 'Pebbles', and 'Jallikattu' have been selected as India's official Oscars entries. 

India witnessed their best outing at the last Oscars, which were held this year. 'RRR' directed by SS Rajamouli won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, despite not being chosen as India's official entry. 

At Oscars 2023, 'The Elephant Whisperers' also picked up a win in the Best Documentary Short category. India's 'All that Breathes' had also secured a nomination last year in the Best Documentary category. 

For the unversed, only three Indian movies in history have made the final cut in Best International Film category at the Oscars.

'Mother India', 'Salaam Bombay', and 'Lagaan' were the movies which had earned a nomination in the Best International Film category.

Oscars 2024 will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
