Will Smith is busy promoting his upcoming movie 'Emancipation', a historical drama. On Monday, the 54-year-old Hollywood actor made a public appearance on ‘The Daily Show With Trevor Noah’, his first late-night interview since the Oscars 2022 controversy. Will Smith has kept a relatively low profile following the controversy that erupted when he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage during the 94th Academy Awards.

During Will Smith’s recent interview, the topic of him slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars came up and it was then that the actor spoke at length about the incident, saying it was a "horrific night" and he just "lost it".

“That was a horrific night, as you can imagine. There’s many nuances and complexities to it. But at the end of the day, I just — I lost it, you know," Will Smith was quoted as saying by Variety.

"I was going through something that night, you know? Not that that justifies my behavior at all… It was a lot of things. It was the little boy that watched his father beat up his mother, you know? All of that just bubbled up in that moment. That is not who I want to be," he added.

Trevor Noah also weighed in on the topic, saying he loves Chris Rock, and he is indeed friends with him.

"I love Chris. I’m friends with him. I love you, but this is fucked up… I know that as Black people, Black people get together and go, ‘What was Will doing? What the hell happened?’ A lot of Black people were like, ‘He should go to jail.’ Like, you need to relax yourself," said Noah.

At Oscars 2022, Chris Rock had come on the stage to present an award, and the comedian made a joke about Will Smith's wife-actress Jada Pinkett Smith being in ‘GI Jane’ because of her shaved head.

Will Smith's 'Emancipation' will debut in select theatres in the US on December 2, and it will later premiere on Apple TV+ on December 9.
