Watch: Vijay Deverakonda Says He Doesn’t Work With Debutant Directors, Netizens Call It “Arrogant Statement”
Vijay Devarakonda has upset some fans after saying that he doesn’t “work with debutants now”.
Indian actor Vijay Deverakonda, who predominantly works in Telugu films, made his acting debut in the 2011 movie ‘Nuvvila’ and gained stardom with the 2016 romantic comedy ‘Pelli Choopulu’, which was a critical and commercial success. However, it was the 2017 Telugu movie ‘Arjun Reddy’ that catapulted him to nationwide fame. In the Sandeep Reddy directorial, Vijay Deverakonda played the role of a hot-headed surgeon, which established him as one of the leading actors in Telugu cinema. In 2022, Vijay Deverakonda made his Bollywood debut with ‘Liger’, co-starring Ananya Panday.
Vijay Devarakonda, who will be next seen opposite Mrunal Thakur in ‘Family Star’, has been actively promoting the film. In a new interview with IndiaGlitz, Vijay Deverakonda said that he wants directors to “warm up” before they can think of casting him. The actor said that he doesn’t work with debutants when the host asked if he would work with a first-time director.
A clip of the same has now gone viral on Reddit with several social media users trolling Vijay Deverakonda for his statement.

During the interview, Vijay Deverakonda said, “No, I don’t work with debutants now. At least, they need to be one film old. It’s a huge challenge to take up when you come straight onto a set. There will be a lot of pressure to handle the budget and scale. When they do one film, all of us get better with every film. But your first film just gets you into the groove. It’s like having a practice match… it’s like warming up. So, I need them warm and ready for me because when I come, I go all out and I need them to be fully ready to exploit me and use me. So, I don’t work with debutants.”
The Indian actor further said, “Even if they’re one film old, I see that their music sense, their edit sense, their visual storytelling is correct. Their film doesn’t need to be a hit. If they’re one film old and I like them, then I’m game to work with anyone.”
This bit from the video interview, available to watch on IndiaGlitz Tamil’s YouTube channel, went viral on social media and netizens flocked to the comments section to express their opinions. It didn’t sit well with some people, who called the actor “arrogant” and questioned his logic.
One user wrote, “Seriously the more he talks the more I dislike him. He is wayy overrated.”
Another one added, “He only works with seasoned actors like Ananya.”
A third user commented, “Arrogant statement.”
“I think debutants should avoid working with him. He will interfere, tank their film and ruin their chances of getting a second film,” another comment on the post read.
One user said, “What logic! the film industry would die out if this logic was to be followed (Reality: bro knows mere debutants can perform better than him shhh).”
“Haan bhai Liger mein dekh lia Kitna experienced actor hai tu,” another comment read.
Meanwhile, the Indian actor will soon be seen in Parasuram Petla’s ‘Family Star’ with Mrunal Thakur. The film, which will feature Divyansha Kaushik and Rashmika Mandanna in cameos, is set to release on April 5.
Vijay Deverakonda also has a period action film with director Gowtam Tinnanuri in the pipeline.
