Bollywood Movies 2023 That Entered Rs 100 Crore Club. Check Full List
Bollywood movie news: 2023 saw a huge number of film releases. In this blog, we present you a list of the Hindi movies that became a part of the Rs 100 crore club.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought nearly everything to a standstill, prompting numerous countries to implement stringent measures to control its deadly spread. Bollywood movies were no exception, experiencing the harsh impact of this global pandemic. The health crisis adversely affected the entertainment industry. Following a prolonged shutdown due to the pandemic, cinemas finally reopened with the aftereffects of the lockdown in October 2020. But the entertainment industry returned with full force in 2022 with new Bollywood movies.
Some 2022 Bollywood movies like 'Laal Singh Chaddha' starring Aamir Khan, 'Raksha Bandhan' starring Akshay Kumar, and 'Shamshera' featuring Ranbir Kapoor, tanked at the box office. Meanwhile, several new Bollywood movies achieved blockbuster status, entering the coveted Rs 100 crore club. This included the event film 'Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva’, the horror-comedy 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, and 'The Kashmir Files’, which had triumphant runs in theatres, breaking numerous box office records.
The Hindi film industry made a spectacular start to 2023 with Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback film ‘Pathaan’, co-starring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, as per Bollywood movie news. Released on January 25, 2023, the film was a massive box office success as it crossed the Rs 500 crore mark at the box office, shattering several records.
While Akshay Kumar’s ‘Selfiee’ and Kartik Aaryan-starrer ‘Shehzada’ struggled at the box office, Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s Holi release ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’ made almost Rs 150 crore at the domestic box office, giving the industry its second hit this year. Another notable success was Sudipto Sen's 'The Kerala Story,' with Adah Sharma in the lead role, as per Bollywood movie news.
According to Bollywood movie news, June was a mixed bag for Bollywood movies with a surprising hit like Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan’s ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’, an unexpected box office disaster like Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan-starrer ‘Adipurush’ and Kartik Aaryan-Kiara Advani’s ‘SatyaPrem Ki Katha’, which performed reasonably well.
Following a mixed June, Bollywood delivered another hit in the form of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt's movie ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, which brought back classic Bollywood romance to the silver screen, as per Bollywood movie news.
August 2023 kicked off with a bang, as Sunny Deol's 'Gadar 2' and Akshay Kumar's 'OMG 2' emerged as massive successes. Ayushmann Khurrana's latest release, 'Dream Girl 2’, also did decent business during its first weekend, as per the latest Bollywood movie news.
As August 2023 comes to an end, let’s reflect on the exceptional box office performances of several Bollywood films that were released this year and entered the Rs 100 crore club, as per the latest Bollywood movie news.
1. Pathaan: The 2023 Hindi movie, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham, was released in the theatres on January 25, 2023. The Siddharth Anand directorial marked the return of SRK to the silver screen after the 2018 Bollywood film ‘Zero’. The film saw a jaw-dropping opening, and in its entire run, 'Pathaan' collected Rs 524 crore in the Hindi version, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi movie of all-time in India, surpassing SS Rajamouli's magnum-opus 'Baahubali: The Conclusion'.
As per the latest Bollywood movie news, there was a festive feel when 'Pathaan' was released as fans of SRK danced their hearts out in theatres when 'Besharam Rang' and 'Jhoome Jo Pathaan' played out. Salman Khan’s brief cameo appearance as he shared the screen space with SRK in ‘Pathaan’ was met with hooting, cheering and applause. And who can forget the famous dialogue, "Bacho pe nahi chddh sakte, humein he karna padega?”
2. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar: The Hindi movie, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles, was directed by Luv Ranjan and released in theatres on the occasion of Holi 2023. The movie marked the return of Ranbir Kapoor to the genre of rom-com. Despite not doing any rom-coms for a long time, it did not look like Ranbir missed a beat. His portrayal as a love-struck man won applause from all corners. Ranbir Kapoor’s insane chemistry with his co-star Shraddha Kapoor also received a lot of love from the audience.
The movie ended its run in India with a collection of almost Rs 150 crore, and this was the second 100-crore film for Ranbir Kapoor after 2019. Apart from Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar' also starred Dimple Kapadia and Boney Kapoor. The movie also featured epic cameos by Kartik Aaryan and Nushrratt Bharuccha.
3. Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan: The family entertainer, starring Salman Khan, marked his first full-fledged role after he appeared in a supporting role in the 2021 Bollywood movie ‘Antim’. The Hindi movie also marked the Bollywood debut of ‘Bigg Boss 13’ fame Shehnaaz Gill and Shweta Tiwari’s daughter Palak Tiwari. ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ also starred Venkatesh Daggubati and Pooja Hegde, among others. The movie was panned by the critics for its story and performances. However, poor reviews were not able to reduce the buzz around Salman Khan’s movie, and it went on to make more than Rs 100 crore at the domestic box office, according to the latest Bollywood news.
The movie was directed by Farhad Samji and it was produced by Salman Khan Films. For the uninitiated, 'Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan' is a remake of 214 Tamil film 'Veeram'.
4. The Kerala Story: Directed by Sudipto Sen, it is one of the most polarising movies to be released this year in India. The 2023 Hindi movie starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani, was criticised by the critics for its plot, performances and dialogues. However, ‘The Kerala Story’ turned out to be a big money-spinner as it earned more than Rs 240 crore at the domestic box office, as per the latest Bollywood news.
The plot of the movie revolves around a group of women from Kerala who are coerced into converting to Islam and joining the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The movie was marketed as a true story, but there is no proof that the film is based on a real story.
While many slammed the film for its content, ‘The Kerala Story’ received support from state governments of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Uttarakhand as it was declared tax-free in these states.
5. Adipurush: The 2023 Indian mythological action film, directed by Om Raut starred Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, and Devdatta Nage in the lead roles. The mythological action film was based on the Indian epic 'Ramayana'. Ever since it was released on June 16, 2023, ‘Adipurush’ became a huge talking point, and it was criticised by fans, critics, and many religious groups.
As per the latest Bollywood news, the movie’s dialogues were also slammed by several people. After facing criticism, some of the dialogues were altered. Despite the negative reviews that this modern retelling of 'Ramayana' received, it somehow managed to collect more than Rs 100 crore in the Hindi version. However, the budget of the film was reported to be around Rs 600 crore, and hence it proved as a big box office dud.
6. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani: This Bollywood movie marked the return of Karan Johar to the big screen for the first time since 2016's 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'. The new Hindi movie starred Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Dharmendra, Churni Ganguly, Tota Roy Chowdhary, Aamir Bashir, Kshitee Jog and Anjali Anand.
From a star-studded cast to lavish houses, snow-clad mountains, amazing costumes, swanky cars, families and their values – the KJo directorial won the hearts of the masses as they felt it was a complete package of entertainment.
It revolves around two opposites, Rocky (played by Ranveer Singh) and Rani (played by Alia Bhatt), who fall in love but their families clash with each other due to cultural differences. They decide to switch their homes in the movie to know if they are compatible with each other’s families.
The movie is still running in theatres, but it has already earned more than Rs 145 crore at the domestic box office.
7. Gadar 2: The new Hindi movie, starring Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma, and Luv Sinha, is a sequel to the 2001 hit ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha'. The movie directed by Anil Sharma has emerged as a massive success story, and it has already made more than Rs 400 crore. 'Gadar 2' has shattered several box office records, and now it needs to be seen whether it manages to break the record of 'Pathaan' to become the highest-grossing Hindi film in India.
Apart from Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, and Utkarsh Sharma, ‘Gadar 2’ also stars Manish Wadhwa, Gaurav Chopra, Simrat Kaur, Rakesh Bedi and Dolly Bindra. The popular songs from the 2001 original, ‘Udd Jaa Kaale Kaava’ and ‘Main Nikla Gaddi Leke’ have been recreated for ‘Gadar 2’.
‘Gadar 2’ revolves around a father Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), who would go to any length to bring back his son Jeete (Utkarsh Sharma) from Pakistan where he has been held captive by army general Hamid Iqbal (Manish Wadhwa).
8. OMG 2: The new Hindi movie, starring Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, and Yami Gautam, has been directed by Amit Rai. The plot of the movie revolves around the sensitive topic of sex education. Before the release of the film, the movie was surrounded by controversies, and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) decided to give the movie an 'A' certificate looking at the subject it is dealing with.
However, when the movie was released on the same day as 'Gadar 2', many people called out CBFC for wrongly giving it an 'A' certificate. Despite facing stiff competition from 'Gadar 2', 'OMG 2' has managed to hold its ground, and it has already made more than Rs 130 crore at the box office.
Coincidentally, there is a scene in ‘OMG 2’ featuring Akshay singing the ‘Gadar’ song ‘Udja Kale Kawan’.
Special mentions: ‘SatyaPrem Ki Katha’, starring Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani, opened to good reviews. While it couldn’t enter the 100 crore club, the movie did decent business, making Rs 83.85 crore domestically with a worldwide collection of Rs 125 crore.
‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’, featuring Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan, proved to be a sleeper hit and collected Rs 88.35 crore in India with a worldwide collection of Rs 116 crore.
