The love sportspersons and film stars enjoy in the country is second to none and when both these topics combine to come on the big screen, the spectacle is nothing less than spell-bounding. In the history of Indian cinema, we have had quite a few movies which have been biopics on the life of famous sportspersons and they have turned out to be huge hits. 

In daily Bollywood news, Sports biopics have been made for a very long time in Indian cinema and when directors get it right, both audiences and critics show their widespread appreciation.

1. Paan Singh Tomar

This movie starring Irrfan Khan is based on the life of Paan Singh Tomar, a former soldier of the Indian army and seven-time steeplechase champion. The movie showcases how this famous sportsperson ends up becoming an armed rebel against the system. The film was directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and it also starred Mahie Gill, Vipin Sharma and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in key roles.

In the daily Bollywood news, this movie received love from both the critics and audiences and it also won Best Feature and Best Actor at the 60th National Film Awards.

2. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

The movie starred Farhan Akhtar in the lead role, and it was directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The Hindi film was based on the life of Milkha Singh, an athlete who was a champion of the Commonwealth Games and he was also a 2-time 400m champion of the Asian Games. The movie also featured Divya Dutta, Sonam Kapoor, Meesha Shafi, Pavan Malhotra, Yograj Singh, Art Malik, and Prakash Raj in supporting roles.

In trending Bollywood news, 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' was inspired by 'The Race of My Life', an autobiography co-written by Singh and his daughter, Sonia Sanwalka. Not many people know that Milkha Singh had sold the film rights for one rupee and he also inserted a clause in the contract stating that a share of the profits would be given to the Milkha Singh Charitable Trust.

3. Mary Kom 

The movie was based on boxer Mary Kom, who is also a former Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. For the unversed, Mary Kom is the only woman to win the Boxing World Championships six times and she is the only female boxer to have won a medal in each of the first seven World Championships.

'Mary Kom' starred Priyanka Chopra in the lead role and it also featured Darshan Kumar and Sunil Thapa in supporting roles. The film also marked the Hindi playback singing debut of Chopra, who provided her vocals for a song named 'Chaoro'. The movie had premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2014, and hence it became the first Hindi film to be screened on the opening night of the festival. 

4. MS Dhoni: The Untold Story

The movie directed by Neeraj Pandey was based on the life of World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni. The former India captain has won everything possible -- T20 World Cup, 50-over World Cup, and the Champions Trophy. The film told the story of MS Dhoni's journey till the 2011 World Cup win in India. The main character of Dhoni was played by the late Sushant Singh Rajput.

The movie also starred Disha Patani, Kiara Advani, and Anupam Kher in lead roles, and this Hindi film chronicled the life of Dhoni from a young age through a series of life events. This movie was released in 2016 in multiple languages such as Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. 'MS Dhoni: The Untold Story' went on to become Sushant Singh Rajput's biggest hit.

5. Dangal

This 2016-film is based on the life of amateur wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and how he trained his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari to become India's first world-class female wrestlers. Aamir Khan played the role of Mahavir Phogat and he won praise for undergoing a complete transformation to play this role. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra played the adult versions of the two Phogat sisters while Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar played the younger versions.

The movie won four awards at the Filmfare Awards and it turned out to be a huge box-office success as well, earning more than Rs 300 crore at the Indian box office. 

6. Soorma

This Hindi language film was based on the life of hockey player Sandeep Singh. The Indian hockey player was injured after being hit by an accidental gunshot on the Kalka Shatabdi Express train, and he was almost paralysed for one year. He was 20 at that time, but he ended up establishing himself once again, and he played the World Cup for India in 2010.

The movie tells this exact story, by taking a few creative liberties. The movie starred Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, and it also featured Angad Bedi and Taapsee Pannu in key roles.

7. 83

This movie directed by Kabir Khan is based on the Cricket World Cup victory achieved by the Kapil Dev-led team in 1982. '83- starred Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, and other cast members include, Deepika Padukone, Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Jatin Sarna, Chirag Patil, Dinker Sharma, Nishant Dahiya, Harrdy Sandhu, Sahil Khattar, Ammy Virk, Adinath Kothare, Dhairya Karwa, and R Badree.

The movie was received well by the audiences, however, it did not fair too well at the box office due to the COVID-19 pandemic. '83- received 14 nominations at the Filmfare Awards, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Lyricist, and Best Supporting Actor.
