After a lukewarm opening, Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh’s ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ has gained solid momentum at the box office over its first weekend. Marking the superstar’s return to the big screen after three years, the film initially opened to modest numbers – collecting Rs 10.7 crore on Friday. However, strong word-of-mouth and positive reviews gave the film a major boost across Saturday and Sunday. According to Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 20.2 crore on Saturday (June 21), exactly doubling its opening day earnings.

Sunday saw an even bigger leap with Rs 29.22 crore, bringing the total weekend collection to Rs 60.12 crore in India.

The film’s Hindi version continues to dominate, contributing Rs 29 crore on Sunday alone. In comparison, the Tamil and Telugu versions brought in Rs 17 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively. The film recorded 50.70 per cent occupancy in Hindi on Sunday.

This is a significant improvement for Aamir Khan, especially after the underwhelming performance of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ (2022), which managed just Rs 61.36 crore during its entire run. With ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ already inching close to that mark in just three days, it seems poised to surpass it soon.

In contrast, Aamir's 2018 release ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ earned Rs 41.5 crore over its first weekend – considerably less than ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’. Despite its Rs 300 crore budget, ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ wrapped its domestic run at Rs 133 crore. Meanwhile, ‘Dangal’ (2016) remains Aamir Khan’s biggest success, with Rs 387.38 crore in India, including Rs 77.23 crore during its debut weekend.

Compared to other recent big releases, ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ held its ground on its first Saturday and Sunday. Though it earned less than Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Chhaava’ (Rs 85 crore) and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Housefull 5’ (Rs 63.5 crore) over the weekend, it outperformed ‘Raid 2’ (Rs 30 crore), ‘Sikandar’ (Rs 30 crore), ‘Kesari Chapter 2’ (Rs 22.75 crore), and ‘Jaat’ (Rs 23.75 crore).

A spiritual sequel to the beloved 2007 film ‘Taare Zameen Par’, the new movie flips the narrative. Aamir plays Gulshan, a disgraced basketball coach assigned to train a group of neurodivergent individuals – a stark contrast to his compassionate teacher role in the original.

Meanwhile, Dhanush and Rashmika Mandanna’s ‘Kuberaa’ also had a strong Sunday, adding Rs 17.62 crore to its tally. The film now stands at Rs 49.24 crore domestically, led by its Telugu version. ‘Kuberaa’ has already outperformed Dhanush’s previous outings, ‘Raayan’ (Rs 42.65 crore) and ‘Captain Miller’ (Rs 23.95 crore). The film also marks Nagarjuna’s return to cinemas since 2022.

Directed by Sekhar Kammula and produced by Sree Venkateswara Cinemas and Amigos Creations, ‘Kuberaa’ also stars Jim Sarbh and Dalip Tahil.
