Yearender: List Of Top 10 Highest-Grossing Indian Movies Of 2023
With another year coming to an end, we present you the list of the highest-grossing Indian movies of 2023.
It is no secret that Bollywood was struggling for the past two to three years. There were very few success stories when it came to Bollywood. Negativity against the Hindi film industry after the tragic death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, was rampant and there was a #BoycottBollywood campaign which was being run to derail the Hindi movie industry. Filmmakers were not able to come up with engaging content as well, and the audience was tired of being served the same dish over and over again. The movies from the South were working big time and many said that Bollywood would never reclaim its glory days, and none of the Bollywood stars would be able to witness peak stardom.
However, 2023 has acted like a big slap to the naysayers as the Hindi film industry came roaring back. The year started with a bang as Shah Rukh Khan's comeback to the big screen after a gap of more than four years, brought happy days back for the Hindi film industry.
Directed by Siddharth Anand, 'Pathaan' which also stars John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Dimple Kapadia, and Ashutosh Rana, went on to do a business of more than Rs 1,000 crore globally. In India, it did a business of more than Rs 500 crore. At that time, 'Pathaan' also broke the record of 'Baahubali 2' to become the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time.
It looked like 'Pathaan's record would stand for a long time, but who knew that 'Pathaan's collection would be surpassed by two movies in the same year?
Yes, you read that right! First, Sunny Deol's comeback to the big screen with 'Gadar 2' broke several records. The Anil Sharma directorial went on to do a business of more than Rs 520 crore, and the movie, which also stars Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma, became the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time.
However, 'Gadar 2's record was broken by SRK himself in a matter of two days as his 'Jawan' directed by Atlee, which also stars Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi and Deepika Padukone, went on to do a business of whopping Rs 640 crore. As 2023 comes to an end, 'Jawan' is the highest-grossing Indian film of the year, and who knows when the record will be broken next.
Ranbir Kapoor's 'Animal', directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, which also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, and Triptii Dimri, released in theatres on December 1, went on to do a business of more than Rs 500 crore in India as well.
This collection is massive looking at how the film was 3 hours long, received an 'A' certificate, and clashed with another film at the box office.
2023 was also a solid year for mid-budget films as movies like 'The Kerala Story', 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar', 'Zara Hatke Zara Bachke', 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani', 'OMG 2', 'Dream Girl 2', 'Fukrey 3', '12th Fail, and 'Sam Bahadur' also tasted success at the box office.
SRK's third release of the year, 'Dunki' was not able to do the same amount of business as his previous two releases this year, but looking at the genre of the film, the collection of the film is very impressive.
It is not like only Hindi films were successful in 2023. The year turned out to be a goldmine for movies from all parts of the country. Films like 'Leo', 'Jailer', 'Ponniyin Selvan 2', and 'Salaar' also turned out to be successful at the global box office.
