Looking at this crazy fandom, you would expect every star-led movie to work wonders at the box office, considering fans just show up to support their favourite actor. However, this is not to be the case.
Over the past two decades, several high-profile films, headlined by major movie stars, have tanked at the box office.
The likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Ranbir Kapoor have all gone wrong with their movie choices, and in this piece, we will talk about 5 high-profile films, headlined by superstars, which tanked miserably at the box office.
So, without further ado, here is the list:
1. Zero (Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif)
Zero, directed by Aanand L Rai, starred Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma, Katrina Kaif, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in leading roles. The film which was released in 2018 revolved around a short-heighted man Bauua Singh (SRK) and how he found a companion in Aafia Bhinder (Anushka Sharma), a scientist with cerebral palsy. However, the man also ends up developing a bond with film superstar Babita and this love triangle makes matters worse for everyone involved. The film opened to negative reviews from all corners, and it was not even able to recover its Rs 200 crore budget.
2. Tubelight (Salman Khan)
Directed by Kabir Khan, the Hindi film starred Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, and Zhu Zhu. The movie is set against the backdrop of the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The Eid release of 2017 tanked miserably at the box office, and it brought an end to a golden run for Salman Khan at the box office. The movie received negative reviews from all corners, and even die-hard Bhai fans cannot stand by this film.
3. Kites (Hrithik Roshan)
The Hindi film directed by Anurag Basu starred Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori, Kangana Ranaut, and Kabir Bedi in leading roles. Hrithik Roshan fans were anticipating the movie's release for a long time however once it was released in cinemas in 2010, the movie was heavily criticised for the multilingual narrative that featured the majority of dialogue in English and Spanish, even when it was advertised as a Hindi-language film in India. Made on a budget of Rs 80 crore, the film did not even make Rs 50 crore.
4. Jagga Jasoos (Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif)
This Anurag Basu-directorial had high hopes considering how his previous collaboration with Ranbir Kapoor in the form of 'Barfi' turned out to be a winner for both parties. 'Jagga Jasoos' stars Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor in leading roles, and the film tells the story of a teenage detective in search of his missing father. The Indian audience was not able to connect with the story, even when it was praised by some critics for its ambition. The film failed to go past Rs 100 crore, and it is considered to be a colossal flop when you look at its budget.
5. Bombay Velvet (Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma)
Bombay Velvet directed by Anurag Kashyap was one of the most-anticipated films of 2015. Comprising Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Karan Johar, Kay Kay Menon, Manish Choudhary, and Vivaan Shah, the film was billed as a bonafide blockbuster even before its release. However, the film came crashing down in its first week itself, as after being made on a budget of more than Rs 120 crore, the film only grossed around Rs 23 crore in the first week. The film is considered a commercial disaster.
