Akshay Kumar Gives His Reason For Why Films Are Tanking At Box Office
Akshay Kumar revealed why most of the films have been tanking at the box office in recent times.
Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has been going through a lean run at the box office. Several of his past few releases such as ‘Sarfira’, ‘Khel Khel Mein’ and ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ tanked at the ticket counters. Hence, it is no surprise that there is a lot riding on his upcoming release ‘Sky Force’, which is set to hit the theatres on Friday, January 24, 2025. Ahead of the release, Akshay Kumar, during an interview, was asked to give his opinion on why he thinks most of the Indian films have been faring poorly at the box office.
To this question, Akshay Kumar had a simple answer, saying the introduction and popularity of OTT platforms has led to the reduction in footfalls inside the theatres.
“I meet a lot of people and they often say that we will watch it on OTT so that is the biggest reason. That is what the whole thing is,” Akshay Kumar told Pinkvilla during an interaction.
Khiladi Kumar also stated that during the pandemic, people got used to watching content at home, and they have not been able to recreate the habit of going to the theatres for a wholesome community experience.
“Let’s not beat around the bush. Things have changed after that… after Covid, people got used to going on OTT platforms and watching things. It’s a habit that has been taken,” Akshay Kumar said.
Earlier, while speaking to Forbes India, Akshay Kumar had shared similar sentiments, saying, “The pandemic has undoubtedly changed the dynamics of the film industry. With audiences being more selective about their cinema outings, it has become crucial to choose projects that offer something completely entertaining and unique.”
“I’ve become more mindful of the content, ensuring that it resonates with the current times and provides an experience that justifies a trip to the theatre. It’s about finding stories that not only entertain but also connect deeply with the audience,” he added.
In 2024, Akshay Kumar was seen in lead roles in films like ‘Khel Khel Mein’, ‘Sarfira’ and ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’. All these projects tanked miserably at the box office.
In 2023, his films such as ‘Selfiee’ and ‘Mission Raniganj’ also flopped. His last success was ‘OMG 2’, which featured the actor in an extended cameo appearance. He had also produced the film, co-starring Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam.
