Here’s Why Bobby Deol Walked Out Of Karan Johar’s ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’
Karan Johar’s ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, which was a critical and commercial success, starred Dharmendra as Ranveer Singh’s grandfather.
Bollywood actor Bobby Deol has been receiving praise from all quarters for his powerful performance as a ruthless antagonist in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Animal’. The new Hindi movie, also starring Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor and Triptii Dimri, is being criticised for its problematic and misogynistic content. Despite all the negative chatter around the film, it is proving to be a box office winner. The movie’s stars have been making several public appearances and giving multiple interviews.
In a new interview with Pinkvilla, Bobby Deol revealed that he could not sit through the entirety of Karan Johar’s ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, which starred his father Dharmendra in a pivotal role.
For the unversed, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ had opened to favourable reviews from critics, and performed well at the box office, collecting over Rs 150 crore in India. Apart from Dharmendra, the 2023 Hindi movie starred Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Shabana Azmi, and Jaya Bachchan.
Revealing why he walked out ‘RRKPK’, Bobby Deol said, “Wo character agar koi aur karta toh mazza hi nahi aata. Papa made it magical. Actually when I was watching the film, mere ko kahaani nahi malum thi. My dad's character dies in it, couldn't see the film. I was at Karan Johar's trial and I couldn't stop crying because my father somehow, I just couldn't handle it and I left and won't see the ending of the film.”
Bobby Deol further said, “Because that's how we are, we love each other. We are very connected family. I know he is playing a part but still. When I did Animal, my mum couldn't handle death scene.”
For the unversed, in the second half of ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, Dharmendra's character Kanwal, who is amnesiac and wheelchair-bound, finally recognises his son (played by Aamir Bashir) but dies shortly after.
The star cast of the movie also included Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, Kshiti Jog, Aamir Bashir, Anjali Anand, Namit Das, and Abhinav Sharma among others.
In the movie, Rocky (played by Ranveer Singh), a Punjabi West Delhi businessman, falls in love with Rani (Alia Bhatt), a progressive Bengali journalist.
Co-written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan, and Sumit Roy, the film released in cinemas on July 28. It began streaming on Amazon Prime Video India on September 22.
