“Not Received My Due”: Ileana D’cruz Reveals She Stopped Getting South Films After ‘Barfi’
Ileana D'cruz recently revealed how working in Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi’ affected her career in the South Indian film industry.
Bollywood actress Ileana D’Cruz, who recently featured in the new Hindi movie ‘Do Aur Do Pyaar’, is known for giving some notable performances on the silver screen. One of her most notable performances came in Anurag Basu’s critically acclaimed 2012 Bollywood movie ‘Barfi’. The movie, a heart-touching tale of love, friendship, and acceptance, featured Ileana D'Cruz alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. The film's beautiful narrative and outstanding performances made it a must-watch. You would think starring in this film would have paved the way for Ileana D’Cruz’s successful film career. However, she feels otherwise.
According to Ileana D’Cruz, her stint in Bollywood seems to have hampered her upward ascent in South cinema. The actress recently opened up about how she faced a lack of offers from the South after she went on to star in Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi’. Ileana also opened up about her craft not getting “noticed” in the industry.
In an interview with India Today, Ileana D’cruz shared that when she did a film in Bollywood people got a misconception that she was not open to working in the South film industry anymore.
Ileana D'Cruz told India Today, “It wasn't meant to be a shift. It was me doing a Hindi film because I genuinely loved 'Barfi' as a story. I thought that it was an unusual film, and I didn't really see myself doing anything like that or having something like that come my way ever again. It was a one-off and I thought it would be stupid to give it up. It wasn't like ‘Oh, now I am moving my base to Bollywood, and I am never going to do a South Indian film again.’ But I feel somewhere when I signed up to do 'Barfi', there was this weird misconception that 'she's moving to Bollywood now. She's not going to be interested in doing South films.'”
Ileana D'Cruz elaborated that due to this misconception, she stopped getting offers from the South. She said, “The offers kind of just dwindled away. I didn't really get many offers at all but yes, it's true that I did become more selective about the work I want to do after moving to Bollywood.”
When asked if she feels she has not received her due in the entertainment industry, Ileana D'Cruz said, “If I'm being completely honest, no, I don't feel like I've received my due. I definitely feel that a lot of the work that I've done has kind of gone unnoticed. And I don't know why.”
Ileana D'Cruz recently featured in ‘Do Aur Do Pyaar’, co-starring Vidya Balan, Pratik Gandhi, and Sendhil Ramamurthy. While ‘Do Aur Do Pyaar’ received critical acclaim, it failed to perform well at the box office.
In 2023, the actress welcomed her first child and also announced her marriage to beau Michael Dolan.
