"Legitimizes Male Misogyny": 'Kabir Singh' Actor Regrets Being Part Of Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Film
Actor Adil Hussain has said that 'Kabir Singh' is the only film of his career that he regrets being a part of.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga's 'Kabir Singh', the official Hindi adaptation of Telugu-hit 'Arjun Reddy', was released in cinemas in 2019, and it emerged as a major box office success story. The movie was bashed for glorifying toxic masculinity and misogyny, however, the film braved negative reviews to emerge as the biggest solo hit of Shahid Kapoor's career. In the latest entertainment news, actor Adil Hussain has said that 'Kabir Singh' is the only film of his career that he regrets being a part of.
For the unversed, Adil played the role of Shahid Kapoor’s college professor in the film.
During his appearance on the YouTube channel AP Podcast, Adil Hussain admitted that he agreed to do the film without reading the script first. “That’s the only film in my life that I have done without reading the script, without seeing the movie which it is based on.” Adil said that he went to watch the film in a theatre after the release and walked out in 20 minutes. “I regret it till today. The only movie I have regretted doing is that film… Kabir Singh,” he said.
Adil also said that Kabir Singh is a “misogynist” film that made him “feel small as a human being.”
“I think a film like this, it celebrates something which is not beneficial for the society. It legitimizes male misogyny. It legitimizes violence against anybody for that matter, doesn’t have to be a woman. And it celebrates it, it glorifies it and it should not be glorified,” he said.
The senior actor also said that he initially refused to be a part of 'Kabir Singh' because of time constraints.
“I told my manager, ask them lot of money and they will say no but they agreed so I went and did it and I liked the scene. The scene I did is a good scene so I thought the film is also going to be good. So I go to watch the film and I thought what am I doing here? You have no idea how I felt. I felt so embarrassed,” he said.
Adil also said that he is mortified at the thought of his wife watching the film.
“She would be so angry if she sees this,” he said.
During the same conversation, Adil said that he has not seen Sandeep Reddy Vanga's latest film 'Animal' so he does not wish to comment on the film.
