'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' and 'The Kerala Story' are in contention to be chosen as India’s entry for Oscars 2024.

There is always curiosity around which Indian film will be the country's official entry for the Oscars. Since the Academy Awards 2024 are approaching fast, the race to find India’s official entry for the upcoming Oscars has officially begun. As per a recent report in Hindustan Times, movies like 'Balagam', 'The Kerala Story', 'Zwigato' and 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' are in contention as of now. The Oscar committee has started its process to narrow down on India's official entry through several screenings in Chennai and the final announcement is expected by next week.

The same report stated that the Oscar committee has received over 22 entries from all over India, and the final decision will be made by a 17-member jury, headed by filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli.

“Some of the films, which have been sent to the Film Federation of India for Oscar selection, include names such as Anant Mahadevan’s The Storyteller (Hindi), Music School (Hindi), Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway (Hindi), 12th Fail (Hindi), Viduthalai Part 1 (Tamil), Ghoomer (Hindi), and Dasara (Telugu)," Hindustan Times quoted a source as saying.

Anil Sharma, whose directorial ‘Gadar 2’ became the second highest-grossing Hindi movie of all time, had earlier opened up about sending the movie to the Oscars. Now, according to the recent Hindustan Times report, the application for ‘Gadar 2’ has also been received but the fees is pending.

“The list might have additions such as Vaalvi (Marathi), Gadar 2 (Hindi), Ab Toh Sab Bhagwan Bharose (Hindi), and Baap Lyok (Marathi). We have received their application, but are waiting for the fees," the source added.

The committee members have reached Chennai, and are excited about the process to narrow down the official entry.

“The screening started yesterday, and would take a week as there is a huge pool of films to be watched and then they will decide. We can expect an announcement about the official entry from India next week,” informed the source.

Last year, Pan Nalin’s Gujarati film, 'Last Film Show (Chhello Show)' was announced as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category of the 95th Academy Awards.

The Oscars 2023 turned out to be historic for India after SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' and Guneet Monga's 'The Elephant Whisperers' brought home two Academy Awards.

The 96th Academy Awards are slated to be held on March 10, 2024.
