“Cried While...”: Shahid Kapoor Regrets Not Doing ‘Rang De Basanti’, Reveals Part He Was Offered To Play
Shahid Kapoor said that he regrets not being a part of ‘Rang De Basanti’ and also revealed the part that was offered to him.
‘Rang De Basanti’, which released in 2006, is one of the most iconic Bollywood movies and we are still in awe of what Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra created with Aamir Khan in the lead. The movie, co-starring Alice Patten, Soha Ali Khan, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, R Madhavan, and Siddharth, questioned corruption in the government, a youth that has lost its way and the religious divide in India. The film, which featured iconic songs like ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Khalbali’, ‘Paathshala’, ‘Roobaroo’, and ‘Tu Bin Bataye’, emerged as a major hit at the box office while receiving rave reviews.
However, who knew that there was even a chance of Shahid Kapoor being a part of the film? The Bollywood actor recently revealed that the makers of ‘Rang De Basanti’ had approached him for a role in the film, which he had to eventually turn down due to date issues.
During his appearance on Neha Dhupia's talk show ‘BFFs With Vogue’, Shahid Kapoor revealed that he was offered to play the role of Karan Singhania in the film, which was later played by Siddharth.
“I regret not doing the film. They wanted me to play the role of Siddharth. I’d cried while reading the script and loved it, but unfortunately, I couldn’t make time for it,” Shahid Kapoor said.
It is important to mention that it was a part Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra struggled a lot to cast. In his autobiography, ‘The Stranger in the Mirror’, the director had revealed how Hrithik Roshan was his first choice for the role, with Aamir also meeting the star, but things didn’t work out.
Later, Abhishek Bachchan was also approached for the role, but he also ended up refusing the film. A month before the shooting started, the makers finally cast Siddharth.
Talking about Shahid Kapoor, he was last seen in ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’, alongside Kriti Sanon, Dharmendra and Dimple Kapadia.
The film is still running in theatres, and is continuing to do well at the box office.
‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’, which was released on February 9, is still managing to collect money. The new Hindi movie minted Rs 2.65 crore on Sunday, which was the 17th day of its release. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the nett domestic collection of the film now stands at Rs 73.55 crore.
It looks like that the film will manage to go past Rs 80 crore. It remains to be seen whether the film manages to go past the lifetime collection of ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’, starring Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan. ‘Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’, the 2023 rom-com, had ended its theatrical run with a collection of Rs 88 crore.
