Triptii Dimri, Avinash Tiwary’s ‘Laila Majnu’ Crosses Lifetime Tally Of Its Original Run In 4 Days
Triptii Dimri and Avinash Tiwary’s ‘Laila Majnu’ has now managed to cross the lifetime tally of its original run in just four days.
Every good film does manage to find its audience; it is just a matter of time! This fact has been further proved right by the release of Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri’s ‘Laila Majnu’. For the unversed, ‘Laila Majnu’ originally released in 2018. But the film had tanked miserably at the box office despite receiving positive reviews from the critics. The 2018 Hindi movie was re-released in cinemas last Friday. ‘Laila Majnu’ has now managed to cross the lifetime tally of its original run in just four days.
The film, directed by Sajid Ali and presented by Imtiaz Ali, bombed at the box office in 2018. But over the years, the Hindi film has managed to develop a solid fan following for itself.
As per entertainment journalist Himesh Mankad, the re-release of ‘Laila Majnu’ across just 75 screens in India, witnessed an opening of Rs 30 lakh.
On Saturday, the film saw a big spike, earning Rs 70 lakh. On Sunday, it earned Rs 1 crore, taking its total weekend collection to Rs 2 crore, which was higher than its original opening weekend, which stood at Rs 1.51 crore.
‘Laila Majnu’ then passed the Monday test with flying colours, as it earned Rs 60 lakh on the fourth day of its re-release. The film’s four-day collection now stands at Rs 2.6 crore, going past its original run of Rs 2.15 crore.
It is important to mention that ‘Laila Majnu’ now has just two days of free run before big new releases of the Independence Day week take over. These releases include Sharaddha Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Stree 2’, Akshay Kumar’s ‘Khel Khel Mein’, and John Abraham's ‘Vedaa’.
It is fair to assume that the re-release of ‘Laila Majnu’ will take a major hit, but considering its run over the weekend, the film is likely to gain some momentum once the euphoria around Independence Day releases dies down.
During the movie’s re-release press conference, Triptii Dimri had shared that both her and Avinash Tiwary were left gutted after the film failed to find any takers at the ticket counters.
Avinash Tiwary also revealed how, when he had gone to watch the film with his parents after three days, its “posters were being pulled down.”
“Once the film was done and it didn’t do well, I just wanted to run away from the idea of Laila Majnu and all of that. I just didn’t want to look at that side because it would give me some pain. I would think on the lines from the film, ‘jhoot hai tumhari duniya,’ and today I think, it is true, there is that pure world beyond the mountains. I feel vindicated today as am sure many do,” The Indian Express quoted Avinash Tiwary as saying.
‘Laila Majnu’ is co-produced by Ektaa Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor and Preety Ali.
