Latest Bollywood Box Office Report: Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar 2' and Akshay Kumar’s 'OMG 2' continued their impressive run, emerging as massive successes.
The fervour surrounding ‘Gadar 2’ and ‘OMG 2’ shows no signs of slowing down. It was a great weekend at the movies as both the new Hindi films pulled people to the cinema halls in large numbers. Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar 2’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘OMG 2’, heavily trending as ‘OHMYGADAR2’, arrived in cinemas on August 11. And both the new Hindi movies are continuing their glorious run at the domestic box office. ‘Gadar 2’, also starring Ameesha Patel, minted Rs 41 crore on Sunday and the current total of the movie now stands at Rs 377.20 crore.
‘Gadar 2’ collected the highest-ever for a feature film in Hindi markets, topping the second-weekend collections of ‘Baahubali 2’, which minted a little under Rs 80 crore. Meanwhile, ‘OMG 2’ made Rs 12.7 crore on its second Sunday, taking its total to Rs 114.31 crore.
The week one collection of the ‘Gadar 2’ was Rs 284.63 crore. On its second Friday, the film earned Rs 20.5 crore and on its second Saturday, it minted Rs 31.07 crore. On the other hand, ‘OMG 2’ minted Rs 85.05 crore in its opening week. Running in its second week, ‘OMG 2’ earned Rs 6.03 crore on Friday and Rs 10.53 crore on Saturday.
It’s impressive for Akshay Kumar’s ‘OMG 2’ to cross the Rs 100 crore mark despite tough competition from Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar 2’ as well as Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’.
For the unversed, ‘Gadar 2’, directed by Anil Sharma, also stars his son Utkarsh Sharma. Meanwhile, ‘OMG 2’ also features Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam.
The first ‘Gadar’, also directed by Anil Sharma, was a blockbuster in 2001, when it clashed against the acclaimed hit ‘Lagaan’, which starred Aamir Khan. It finished with Rs 130 crore at the global box office.
‘Gadar 2’ not just marks return of Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol but also child actor Utkarsh Sharma. The latter is now 29 and plays Tara Singh and Sakeena's son in ‘Gadar 2’ as well.
It is set in the backdrop of the ‘Crush India’ campaign in 1971. It revolves around Tara Singh's efforts to free Charanjeet from Pakistan when he is captured by their army.
‘Gadar 2’ also stars Manish Wadhwa, Gaurav Chopra, Simrat Kaur, Luv Sinha, Rakesh Bedi and Dolly Bindra. The popular songs from the 2001 original, ‘Udd Jaa Kaale Kaava’ and ‘Main Nikla Gaddi Leke’ have been reprised in ‘Gadar 2’.
Talking about ‘OMG 2’, it has directed by Amit Rai and is a sequel to the hit 2012 film ‘OMG – Oh My God!’. The comedy drama delves into the subject of sex education in Indian schools but received an A (adults only) certificate from the censor board after 25 modifications. Coincidentally, there is a scene in ‘OMG 2’ featuring Akshay singing the ‘Gadar’ song ‘Udja Kale Kawan’.
