'Kalki 2898 AD' has become the biggest Indian opener of 2024.

Nag Ashwin’s sci-fi epic ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan and Disha Patani has set the box office on fire. With just its first day’s collection, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ has become the biggest Indian opener of 2024, going past the likes of Hrithik Roshan, Deepika, and Anil Kapoor’s ‘Fighter’ and Mahesh Babu and Sreeleela’s ‘Guntur Kaaram’. As per early estimates posted by industry tracker Sacnilk, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ minted Rs 95 crore on Day 1, across all languages.

Out of this Rs 95 crore, Rs 24 crore came from the Hindi version while the Telugu version contributed Rs 64.50 crore. The Tamil and Malayalam versions contributed Rs 4 crore and Rs 2.2 crore, respectively. The Kannada version contributed only Rs 0.3 crore, as per Sacnilk.

According to Sacnilk, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ made Rs 180 crore on Day 1 in terms of worldwide collection. As a result, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ has now become the third-biggest Indian opener of all time after ‘RRR’ (Rs 223 crore) and ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ (Rs 217 crore).

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ has gone past ‘KGF 2’ (Rs 159 crore), ‘Salaar: Part One – Ceasefire’ (Rs 158 crore), ‘Leo’ (Rs 142.75 crore), ‘Saaho’ (Rs 130 crore), and ‘Jawan’ (Rs 129 crore), to become the third biggest Indian movie opener of all time.

It is important to note that ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ has received generally favourable reviews with some fans and critics pointing out that the first half of the film has pacing issues, while the second half is super impressive.

The movie might now go on to register a mammoth total at the box office. On Friday, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ might witness a slight drop in collection, but the makers would hope for the collection to spike over the weekend.

For the unversed, the sci-fi epic’s story is a mix of Hindu mythology set in a dystopian world where some people are on the mission to save the unborn child of Deepika Padukone’s character. The unborn child is believed to be Kalki, the avatar of Lord Vishnu.

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ also features cameos by Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, Dulquer Salmaan, SS Rajamouli and Ram Gopal Varma.

The new pan-India film's release has also slowed down the progress of Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Chandu Champion’ and Sharvari Wagh, Abhay Verma and Mona Singh’s ‘Munjya’ at the box office.

As per Sacnilk, Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Chandu Champion’ minted Rs 0.49 crore on Thursday, the 14th day of its release. The nett domestic collection of the film now stands at Rs 55.24 crore.

On the other hand, ‘Munjya’ collected Rs 0.75 crore on Thursday, the 21st day of its release. The total nett domestic collection of ‘Munjya’ now stands at Rs 90.80 crore.
