Oscars 2023 Shortlists Released, Huge News For ‘RRR’ And ‘Last Film Show’

Oscars 2023 shortlists were announced on Wednesday night and there is some historic news for India thanks to ‘RRR’ and ‘Last Film Show’ (Chhello Show).

'RRR' and 'Last Film Show' make it to Oscars 2023 shortlist.

In a wonderful piece of a news for Indian film industry, ‘RRR’ and ‘Last Film Show’ (Chhello Show) have been shortlisted for Oscars 2023. The shortlists for the 95th Academy Awards were announced recently for 10 categories. ‘RRR’ was shortlisted for its energetic song ‘Naatu Naatu’, while ‘Last Film Show’ was shortlisted for the International Feature Film category. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body behind Oscars, announced the shortlists on December 21, 2022.

The Academy’s official Twitter handle shared the list, writing, “Presenting the 95th Oscars shortlists in 10 award categories. #Oscars95 Which films will you be adding to your watchlist over the holidays?”

‘Last Film Show’ is competing with films like ‘Argentina’, ‘1985’, ‘Corsage’, ‘Close’ and ‘Joyland’. While 'Naatu Naatu' is up against songs such as 'Time' from ‘Amsterdam’, 'Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength)' from ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, and 'Lift Me Up' from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.

Shaunak Sen’s film ‘All That Breathes’, an internationally co-produced Hindi documentary, is also shortlisted for the Documentary Feature Film category.

Kartiki Gonsalves’ Netflix documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ was shortlisted in the Documentary Short Film category. The documentary is produced by Oscar winner Guneet Monga of Indian documentary ‘Period. End of Sentence’ fame.

It remains to be seen which Indian films will find a spot in the official Oscars 2023 nominations. The only Indian films to have received a nomination for an Oscar so far have been ‘Mother India’, ‘Salaam Bombay’ and ‘Lagaan’.

The official nominations for Oscars 2023 will be unveiled on January 24, 2023, while the Oscars ceremony will be held on March 12, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles.
