'Superman Legacy' Finds Its Director, James Gunn To Helm Project
DC Studios chairman and CEO, James Gunn will be directing the upcoming latest Hollywood movie titled 'Superman Legacy'.
James Gunn, who is serving as the chairman and CEO of DC Studios along with partner Peter Safran, has revealed that he would be directing a previously-announced reboot of the 'Superman' franchise. "Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized," James Gunn tweeted.
"Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude," he said in another tweet.

The plot synopsis of 'Superman: Legacy' was released, saying the upcoming latest Hollywood movie “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
As per Variety, 'Superman: Legacy' is the first movie in a planned universe of cross-platform storytelling projects in a Phase 1 of DC Studios' projects. In its entirety, the Phase 1 has been termed as "Gods and Monsters".
The cast for 'Superman: Legacy' has not been made official yet, but the film is slated to release the theatres on July 11, 2025.
Last year, James Gunn and Peter Safran had taken control of the comic book unit, which is a prized intellectual property stable under Warner Bros. Discovery.
In January this year, the duo had brought their vision in front of the media and they also said that they would always put quality over quantity.
“People have become beholden to [release] dates, to getting movies made no matter what. I’m a writer at my heart, and we’re not going to be making movies before the screenplay is finished,” Gunn had said at the time.
