Vyjayanthi Movies announced Deepika Padukone’s exit from the ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ sequel.

Casting decisions in big-ticket films often shift during pre-production, but when marquee names are involved, such exits are usually handled delicately. However, Vyjayanthi Movies, the production house behind ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, has taken a different route, leaving Deepika Padukone’s fans disappointed with its latest announcement. On Wednesday, the makers confirmed that Deepika will not be part of the ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ sequel.

In an official statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the production house wrote: “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD.”

The message carried a sharp undertone, suggesting that the Indian actress had not committed fully to the project. It continued: “After careful consideration, We have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”

Deepika Padukone played a pivotal role in ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, which starred Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Disha Patani. Her absence in the sequel has left fans both stunned and confused.

Social media platforms were flooded with mixed reactions. “Nag Ashwin should be ready to face the music from Deepika fans,” one user commented, while another speculated, “I don’t think it’s the effect of Prabhas/Spirit. It might be something else.”

Many were taken aback by the tone of the announcement. On Reddit, a user wrote, “Wow, this is shocking. They seem to be pissed. They’re not only announcing her exit, they’re blaming her for it, albeit in professional language. Her management should’ve coordinated a joint statement that was cordial to both sides.” Another comment read, “Damn, they’re openly calling out her lack of commitment. This feels like another Vanga-style fiasco.” Others urged restraint, with one fan writing, “We don’t know the full reason. I just hope things get better and people stop attacking her unnecessarily.”

This exit comes close on the heels of Deepika walking away from another project with Prabhas and Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Spirit’. Reports at the time suggested she had set certain conditions, including an 8-hour workday, a profit-sharing arrangement, and not delivering her dialogues in Telugu. The demands reportedly didn’t sit well with the filmmaker, and she was later replaced by Triptii Dimri.

In light of Deepika’s departure, fans are already suggesting alternatives. Some called for Keerthy Suresh or Kalyani Priyadarshan to step into the role, while others felt that actresses like Mrunal Thakur might bring more expression to the part.

For now, the buzz around the sequel has intensified – not just for its futuristic storyline but also for the drama unfolding behind the scenes.
