Muttiah Muralitharan is one of the best spinners to ever play the game, and he is still the highest wicket-taker in the history of Test cricket. The off-spinner has 800 wickets to his name. The former Sri Lankan cricketer is celebrating his 51st birthday on Monday, and on this special occasion, the makers of upcoming movie '800' unveiled the first look poster from the film. For the unversed, '800' is a biopic on the life of Muttiah Muralitharan. 'Slumdog Millionaire' actor Madhurr Mittal will be essaying the role of the legendary cricketer, which was earlier slated to be played by Vijay Sethupathi.

“The untold story of a legend who spun his way to the top. Starring #MadhurrMittal as #MuthiahMuralidaran, #800MotionPoster," the official handle of Sony Music South tweeted.

'800' is slated to be released in the theatres in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The new movie is being directed by MS Sripathy.

Actor Madhurr Mittal also took to Instagram, to share his feeling on playing such an iconic role.

“Extremely grateful for the opportunity to portray the legend, Muthiah Muralidaran in #800. @murali_800 #GOAT  Launching the first look on his birthday, that he shares with my dearest mother, makes it even more special for me. Coming soon to cinemas in Tamil, Telugu & Hindi,” he tweeted.

In 2020, it was announced that Vijay Sethupathi would be playing the role of Muttiah Muralitharan but it wasn’t to be.

The movie was engulfed in a controversy after Vijay Sethupathi was named as the lead actor. For the unversed, Muttiah Muralitharan is believed to have supported the Sri Lankan government during the civil war with the LTTE. And hence, the Tamil people did not support the decision of Vijay Sethupathi joining the movie.

After a huge backlash, Vijay Sethupathi opted out of the movie.
