South movies are not just doing well in their home markets but they are also minting money across the country. While this year hasn’t seen many successful Bollywood movies, South Indian movies, be it Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam flicks, have enjoyed a great run at the domestic as well as the global box office.

Besides ‘Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva’, ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, most of the big-budget Bollywood movies have tanked at the box office.

South movies like ‘RRR’, ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ and several others have performed wonderfully well, especially after theatres reopened in October 2021 following a nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Let’s have a look at 8 South Indian movies that had a successful run at the box office outshining Bollywood movies:

1. ‘RRR’: SS Rajamouli’s directorial ‘RRR’ featuring Jr NTR and Ram Charan in the lead roles needs no introduction. The South Indian movie, also starring Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt and Olivia Morris, managed to shatter several box office records after earning gross Rs 902 crore in India and collecting nearly Rs 1,000 crore at the box office worldwide.

2. ‘KGF: Chapter 2’: This Yash-starrer action-packed sequel to the 2018 hit ‘KGF: Chapter 1’ was made on a budget of over Rs 100 crore and managed to rake in nearly Rs 1,000 crore domestically and Rs 1,200 crore worldwide. The South movie, helmed by Prashanth Neel, also featured Raveena Tandon and Sanjay Dutt in pivotal roles.

3. ‘Ponniyin Selvan-1’: The Mani Ratnam directorial enjoyed a successful run in cinemas and became the high-grossing movie of all time in Tamil Nadu. The period drama, starring Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Trisha, managed to gross Rs 335 crore in India and Rs 500 crore worldwide.

4. 'Kantara': Kantara, made on a budget of Rs 16 crore approximately, captured a riveting story of ‘Bhoota Kola’ from the hinterlands of Karnataka. It received appreciation for its realistic portrayal of culture and brilliant acting performance by lead star Rishab Shetty. The movie collected over Rs 393.3 crore worldwide.

5. ‘Vikram’: The high-octane action thriller, starring Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil, ended up raking in over Rs 432 crore worldwide. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, it ended its theatrical run at Rs 306 crore gross at the Indian box office.

6. ‘Beast’: Featuring Vijay and Pooja Hedge in the lead roles, ‘Beast’ collected nearly Rs 169 crore at the domestic box office and minted Rs 260 crore globally. Helmed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the action movie faced stiff competition from Yash’s ‘KGF: Chapter 2’.

7. ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’: The action entertainer starring Mahesh Babu and Keerthy Suresh became one of the highest-grossing Telugu movies of this year with a huge box office collection of Rs 200 crore. The action comedy has been directed by Parasuram.

8. ‘Bheemla Nayak’: Starring Pawan Kalyan and Rana Dagubatti, the film ended up making over Rs 193 crore. The Telugu movie has been helmed by Saagar K Chandra.
