'Rang De Basanti' Actor Receives Flak For “Patriarchy” Post On Video Of RCB Fans’ Celebrations After WPL 2024 Triumph
Actor Siddharth has clarified after he received blowback for his “moment of patriarchy” post on a video of RCB fans celebrating their team’s WPL 2024 triumph.
WPL 2024 ended with a bang as Royal Challengers Bangalore won their maiden trophy in the tournament by beating Delhi Capitals in the final on Sunday. This was RCB franchise’s first trophy across the women and men’s formats and this led to an outpouring of emotions from fans. Following RCB’s maiden WPL triumph, fans of the team took to the streets of Bengaluru to celebrate the victory well into the night. While many seemed happy with the going-ons in Bengaluru, one person, actor Siddharth didn’t seem too thrilled with the celebrations.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), quote-tweeting a video of the celebrations, Siddharth wrote, “A team of women won a tournament but not a single woman on the street to celebrate. A quintessential moment of patriarchy in India.”

A quintessential moment of patriarchy in India. https://t.co/M6aHPowO4S
This tweet didn’t sit well with the majority of the people.
Here is how other users responded to Siddharth:
Men celebrating women's success is also patriarchy. Wow.

For everything that ever happens, you have to shove your nonsense?

This actually shows men take great interest in women's sports. Why are you people so negative about everything? It must be so depressing. Do you get some sort of counselling?

Men supporting and cheering and celebrating the victory of a women’s team.
— Aniket Kandge (@AussieBhakt) March 17, 2024
A quintessential moment of equality, women support and appreciation of talent in India.
Lol.

Women not being interested in women's victory is also patriarchy now?
Men being more interested in women's victory than women themselves is patriarchy now?
Finding fault in everything , most pessimistic account I have ever seen

If there were only women there, you would’ve said “Not a single man to celebrate success of women, shows patriarchy in India

Following the blowback, Siddharth decided to clarify his earlier tweet, writing “To clarify, the above tweet is about how public spaces in India are inaccessible for women, especially during the night time. The intent was to point out the irony in the inability of women to celebrate like men on the streets, even for an iconic instance of women’s achievement.”

On Sunday, RCB beat Delhi Capitals by eight wickets in a completely one-sided encounter. Shreyanka Patil and Sophie Molineux were the heroes for RCB with the ball in hand, taking four and three wickets, respectively.
In the chase, Australia’s golden girl Ellyse Perry top scored with an unbeaten 35 to help RCB get over the line without breaking a sweat.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Siddharth was last seen in Tamil film 'Chithha'. The film, which was labelled as one of the best Indian movies of 2023, is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
He will next be seen in 'Indian 2', alongside Kamal Haasan. The film is slated to release later this year.
