It all happened when Angelo Mathews failed to be ready in time to face his first ball. As per the timed-out rule, the batter has to reach the pitch within 2 minutes of the dismissal of the previous player.
Angelo Mathews, however, had entered the ground. Upon reaching, the right-handed batter faced issues with the strap of his helmet, which required him to call for a replacement.
In the process, the 2-minute time had passed. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan ended up appealing, and the umpires decided to rule Mathews out.
As per the official rule book, rule 40.1.1 states: After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.
For the unversed, the bowler does not get credit for this dismissal, just like the run-out dismissal.
After Mathews was ruled out, he was left fuming, and he even had a word with the Bangladesh players.
Talking about the ongoing match, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are out of the race to qualify for the semi-finals.
