If you’ve followed Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s journey, you’d know his long-standing dream of adapting the mythological epic Mahabharata has been no secret. The Bollywood superstar has often spoken about his fascination with the timeless tale and his desire to present it on the big screen. Now, it looks like the wait is finally over. In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir confirmed that he’s ready to bring his ambitious vision to life, and he’s planning to go big. Think ‘Lord of the Rings’ scale, but with Indian mythology at its heart.

He said that the work on the adaptation will begin by the end of this year and he is planning to make it into a two or three-part film series.

“It is one of my biggest ambitions. It will take a while because the writing process will take a few years,” Aamir Khan said.

According to Aamir, the ambitious scale of the project may require multiple directors. Aamir also revealed that he’s considering a ‘Lord of the Rings’-style approach.

“It’s too early to say, but we might need multiple directors. If we have to plan it in a certain timeline… because if you do one after another, it will take very long. Like they did in Lord of the Rings. So something like that — in that case, you will need more than one director,” he added.

However, Aamir Khan remained tight-lipped whether he will act in the film series himself. The actor, who was last seen in 'Laal Singh Chaddha', confirmed that his focus currently is on producing the epic.

He said that the casting decisions will depend on who is the “most appropriate” for the parts.

For the unversed, Aamir Khan's desire to adapt Mahabharata first became public knowledge in 2018. It was in 2022 that Aamir admitted to wanting to produce the film series but he also revealed why he has his reservations.

“When you are making a film on Mahabharata, you are not just making a film. You are performing a yagya. It is not just a film, it is much more. And, that is why I am not ready for it yet. I am scared of bringing it out. Mahabharata will never let you down, but you may let down Mahabharata,” he told Galatta Plus.

Meanwhile, Aamir Khan will next be seen in ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ alongside Genelia Deshmukh.

Aamir Khan's cult comedy ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, which also stars Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal and Shakti Kapoor, is going to re-release in theatres on April 25.
