"Could Hurt Religious Sentiments": Congress MP Says Her Daughter "Couldn't Stop Crying" After Watching 'Animal'
The discourse around 'Animal' has now reached the floor of Rajya Sabha, with Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan telling the Parliament that her daughter broke down in tears after watching the film.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga's 'Animal' continues to rake in the moolah at the box office, but the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer also continues to face criticism on social media for portraying toxic masculinity and too much violence. For the unversed, 'Animal' starring Ranbir, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, and Triptii Dimri, released in theatres on December 1, and it has already made more than Rs 300 crore at the box office.
'Animal' has been drawing controversy for its glorification of toxic masculinity. In the latest entertainment news, the discourse around the film has now reached the floor of Rajya Sabha, with Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan telling the Parliament that her daughter broke down in tears after watching the film.
“Cinema is a mirror of society. We have grown up watching cinema, and it can influence the youth. First, there were films like Kabir Singh and Pushpa, and now there is Animal. My daughter went to watch the film with her college friends, and walked out midway through because she couldn’t stop crying," Ranjeet Ranjan said, as reported by Indian Express.
The Congress MP also said that the film depicts violence towards women, and this can have an impact on the youth of the country.
“Look at Kabir Singh, how he treats his wife, people, and society, and the movie justifies his actions… They have started considering him as a role model. Because we are seeing it in movies, we are seeing this kind of violence in the society, too," she said.
Ranjeet Ranjan then also criticised the use of the song 'Arjan Vailly', in the film.
For the unversed, the Punjabi war anthem plays in a scene where Ranbir Kapoor’s character goes on a murderous rampage. The scene comes just before the interval.
“As far as ‘Arjan Vailly’ is concerned. Hari Singh Nalwa, the commander-in-chief of the Sikh Force, who fought against the Mughals, against the British, his son was Arjan Singh Nalwa. He saved many Muslims from Pakistan’s Gujranwala, before the Partition. The movie uses this historical song in a gang war setting, and this could hurt religious sentiments," she said.
For the unversed, despite the heavy criticism, 'Animal' has already made more than Rs 500 crore globally.
‘Animal’ minted Rs 25.50 crore across all languages on Thursday, which was the seventh day of its release.
Now, the total domestic nett collection of ‘Animal’ stands at a massive Rs 338 crore. ‘Animal’ is now just Rs 4 crore away from going past ‘Sanju’ to become the biggest hit of Ranbir Kapoor's career.
The movie has already surpassed the collection of some of the biggest hits of 2023 – ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, ‘The Kerala Story’, and ‘Tiger 3’.
This box office performance of ‘Animal’ is huge considering it is an ‘A’ (adults only) film and has a runtime of more than three hours.
It can be safely said that ‘Animal’ is expected to rule the ticket counters until Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Dunki’ releases in theatres on December 21. A day later, Prabhas’ ‘Salaar’ will also be releasing in theatres.
