"Blown Everyone's Brains": Karan Johar On Massive Success Of Sunny Deol's 'Gadar 2'
Latest Bollywood news: Karan Johar praised Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel-starrer 'Gadar 2', which is inching closer to the Rs 400 crore mark.
Filmmaker-producer Karan Johar is currently basking in the success of his latest directorial 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani', starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in lead roles. Recently, the acclaimed director said, in the last couple of years, Bollywood was going through a lean patch, and he always knew that the industry will bounce back. In the latest Bollywood news, while talking about the turnaround, Karan Johar also praised Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel-starrer 'Gadar 2', which is inching closer to the Rs 400 crore mark at the box office.
For the unversed, Bollywood saw a dip in footfall in the recent past, but 2023 changed that and witnessed several Hindi movies becoming massive successes, as per the latest Bollywood news. Recently, Bollywood gave five back-to-back hits in the form of 'Zara Hatke Zara Bachke', 'SatyaPrem Ki Katha', 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani', 'Gadar 2', and 'OMG 2'.
Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathaan’, Adah Sharma’s ‘The Kerala Story’ and Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’ were also huge hits.
“I never thought there was any problem with what Bollywood was doing. We have had bad years in the past, and we were having another one or two bad years. It doesn’t mean, ‘Boycott Bollywood’, ‘They are dead’, ‘The South is taking over’. South is great. What they are doing is amazing," Karan Johar told The Indian Express.
“I was the first one who went with all reverence in my heart to Rajamouli sir and wanted to present Baahubali. I am obsessed with them. Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, the four kinds of cinema have catered to different kinds of audiences and have done it with super conviction. So, I have a lot of respect for them. But I also have a lot of respect for the storytellers we have in our (Hindi) cinema," he added.
Talking about the success of 'Gadar 2', Karan Johar said, "Gadar has blown everyone’s brains away because it was a film which was hugely successful in 2001, and now in 2023, it is breaking every record. I have been so glad for the single screens."
“If you will see, all these movies that have done well are riding on one very strong quality, that is, core conviction. They are not looking at validation from anybody else, neither social media nor film critics. Everyone is making personable films that appeal to their sensibilities, and I think that’s what is going to happen, more of that in the future. We will be riding this wave every year," he added.
Talking about 'Gadar 2', the movie earned Rs 14 crore on its second Monday, and the total collection of the new Hindi movie now stands at Rs 389.10 crore, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk.
It needs to be seen whether the Anil Sharma-directorial manages to breach the Rs 400 crore mark on Tuesday or not.
'OMG 2' starring Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, and Yami Gautam, which released on the same day as 'Gadar 2', collected Rs 3.60 crore on Monday, and the total collection now stands at Rs 117.27 crore.
Both 'Gadar 2' and 'OMG 2' will see a reduction in screens later this week, as Ayushmann Khurrana and Ananya Panday-starrer 'Dream Girl 2' releases in the theatres.
