“Abhi Toh Kapde Utar Diye Hai Sabne”: Karan Johar On Being Labelled “Movie Mafia”
Karan Johar opened up about all the hate he received and revealed that it impacted his mother Hiroo Johar negatively.
Filmmaker-producer Karan Johar is riding high on the success of his new directorial venture ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’. The new Hindi movie, which stars Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, released in theatres on July 28 and has been performing well at the box office. It has already entered the Rs 100 crore club in India. The new Hindi movie received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Apart from its innovative storyline, the film’s music and dialogues has also garnered immense praise.
Amid the success of ‘RRKPK’, Karan Johar has been giving several interview. He recently talked about being called a “movie mafia” and how it affected him in an interview with Sucharita Tyagi.
In the interview, KJo shared that he received a lot of hate in the last few years, and it took a toll on his mother, Hiroo Johar. The filmmaker added that he saw her crumbling under the negativity because she used to watch TV channels and read stuff online.
He said, “In the last three years, I felt there was a lot of hate that was coming my way and it had really taken a toll on my mom. I saw her literally crumble under that because she used to watch TV channels. She was reading stuff online. She was watching TV anchors screaming and shouting and saying the most godawful things, demonising me for some reason. Then there were people who were kind of writing the same on Twitter and other social media platforms.”
For the unversed, Kangana Ranaut had accused Karan Johar of encouraging nepotism in Bollywood and not giving a fair chance to outsiders. She first spoke about it while appearing on the celebrity chat show, Koffee With Karan, where she called him the “flagbearer of nepotism”. She has often called him “movie mafia” in her direct and indirect attacks on social media.
On being labelled a “movie mafia”, Karan Johar said, “All I had to be was resilient at that time because I had to be strong for my own mom and for myself. You feel kind of naked after that has happened. Abhi toh kapde utar diye hai sabne. Abhi kya chupana? Kisske ladna?”
He added, “Everyone anyway has kind of stormed into your life, made assumptions. They don’t know the person I am. They just made this perception of mafia or something they keep talking about. They don’t know how a producer on a daily basis is trying to get his or her cast.”
KJo made his directorial comeback to the big screen with ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’, which marked his return after a gap of seven years.
The new Hindi movie also stars Shabana Azmi, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, Aamir Bashir, Kshitee Jog and Anjali Anand.
