Karan Johar’s chat show ‘Koffee With Karan 8’ began with a bang in October 2023 as he invited celebrity couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone to grace the ‘Koffee’ couch. In the season premiere episode, the Bollywood couple talked about their love story and relationship, discussing details that they had never shared publically. However, the episode sparked plenty of reactions from netizens, and Deepika Padukone was trolled for saying that she dated other people while seeing Ranveer Singh.
During the latest episode of ‘Koffee With Karan 8, which featured actors Aditya Roy Kapur and Arjun Kapoor, host Karan Johar said that the negative reaction to the season premiere really “angered” him.
While chatting with Arjun and Aditya, the ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ director said that he believed the Ranveer and Deepika episode to be one of the most "honest and heartfelt” episodes of all time but it had a “ridiculous kind of after effect.”
“I think all three of us came clean on so much of our emotional heft, so many of our feelings and then there was a ridiculous kind of after effect,” he said.
Karan Johar then explained that the reaction to this episode “angered” him.
“I thought it was one of our best episodes. They were outstandingly honest, they were earnest, they spoke so much, they shared so much, they were so gracious and then you f**king talk about some nonsense. I’m like what do you know about somebody’s personal life and marriage. Tu apne ghar pe dekh na is what I wanted to tell all of them. I wanted to show them my f**king middle finger,” he said.
KJo also spoke about being “sexuality shamed” by trolls online. “They’re talking to me about my sexuality, they talk to me about being a single parent, they bring up my kids, that one really fu**ing… They talk about my mother having raised me not well enough to take that decision right. I’m like who the f**k are you,” he said.
For the unversed, during their appearance on the talk show, Deepika and Ranveer opened up about the arrangement they had in the initial stages of their relationship.
“I wanted to be single for a while because I had come from difficult relationships. I was going through a phase where I said ‘I just don’t want to be attached, don’t want to be committed’. And I had fun. And then he comes along, so I didn’t ‘commit, commit’, until he proposed to me. There was no commitment as such. Even if we were technically allowed to see other people, we would just keep coming back to each other,” Deepika shared.
