“But He Said…”: Sunny Deol Reveals He Requested Akshay Kumar To Not Release ‘OMG 2’ With ‘Gadar 2’
Sunny Deol recently revealed that he spoke to Akshay Kumar to avert a box office clash between ‘Gadar 2’ and ‘OMG 2’.
The second episode of ‘Koffee With Karan 8’, hosted by ace director-producer Karan Johar, has finally dropped and it was a truly heart-warming and entertaining one. Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, one of the most famous sibling duos in Bollywood, appeared as guests on the second episode of ‘KWK 8’. While Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol are seldom seen in the public eye, this interview showed a different side of their personalities as it saw them talking candidly about various topics relating to their personal and professional life.
The episode also proved that as macho as the celebrity brother duo looks, they are softies at heart. At the beginning of the episode, Karan Johar gave a standing ovation to the Deol brothers. He also spoke about Sunny Deol’s smashing comeback with ‘Gadar 2’ as the movie shattered several box office records.
Sunny Deol could be seen reminiscing about how he went through an exceptionally dull phase in his career and had to wait for many years to get a taste of success. Host Karan Johar did not hold back and asked Sunny Deol about the big box office clash between ‘Gadar 2’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘OMG 2’.
Talking about it, Sunny Deol said, “Obviously, one wanted the film to be a hit and I had an idea that the film would do well but how well I had no idea. The original Gadar became a massive hit instantly. Everyone that time also there were shows (referring to Akshay Kumar's OMG 2 which was released on the same day as Gadar 2) around the clock. I had no idea what the hell was happening but that's what I was hearing because back then, we used to just leave to shoot the next film.”
When Karan Johar asked Sunny Deol whether he had a chat with Akshay Kumar around the release of 'Gadar 2', the actor said, "I asked him, please don't do it if it is in your hands, but he said, no, the studios and all.”
Sunny Deol then said that he was told “two films can release” simultaneously at the box office without affecting each other. He added, “I said, ‘Okay, go ahead, I can just request, I can’t do anything more than that’.”
He further said, “It's a very emotional thing if you ask me frankly because you know, I thought my film was releasing and I haven't had a success for donkey's years. I didn't want anybody else's to come along with it. Well, but you can't stop anybody. So obviously, it does hurt you. But then I said, does it matter? Let's go along with it. Doesn't matter.”
‘Gadar 2’ and ‘OMG 2’, which released in cinemas on August 11, pulled people to the cinema halls in large numbers. They also became huge talking points on social media, heavily trending as ‘OHMYGADAR2’ upon their release.
Talking about ‘Gadar 2’, the Bollywood film also stars Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma, Simrat Kaur, Manish Wadhwa, Gaurav Chopra, Luv Sinha, Rakesh Bedi and Dolly Bindra. It has been directed by Anil Sharma, who had also helmed the 2001 film ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’.
The total collection of ‘Gadar 2’ currently stands at Rs 525.7 crore. ‘Gadar 2’, which opened to mixed reviews, is the second-highest Hindi movie of all time after ‘Jawan’.
Meanwhile, ‘OMG 2’ made Rs 151.16 crore in India. The Hindi film also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Yami Gautam, Govind Namdev, Pavan Malhotra, Arun Govil, Brijendra Kala, and Hemant Choudhary. It has been helmed by Amit Rai and is a sequel to the hit 2012 film ‘OMG – Oh My God!’.
