Priyanka Chopra Jonas credited Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, And Kangana Ranaut for breaking the “thick glass ceiling” in Hindi cinema.
Global star Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who is awaiting the release of her upcoming Amazon Prime Video series ‘Citadel’, is extensively promoting the project worldwide. She has also been making headlines for openly talking about her experience of working in Bollywood. The actress recently also opened up about performing action scenes in ‘Citadel’. She also credited her Bollywood contemporaries like Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif and Kangana Ranaut for performing incredible action scenes, which have contributed to bringing about change in the Hindi film industry.
In ‘Citadel’, Priyanka Chopra plays the role of an elite spy Nadia Sinh opposite Richard Madden, who stars as Mason Kane. The series features Priyanka Chopra do lavishly mounted action scenes, largely reserved for male stars.
In an interview with The Indian Express, Priyanka Chopra said that the simple reason why female stars were never given that mounting is because of “patriarchy”. But few Hindi films actresses, including Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif and Kangana Ranaut have brought in the change.
“It is a thick glass ceiling. But I think my generation of actresses, there are many of them, that have helped knock that ceiling down in Hindi cinema. Actors like Deepika, Katrina, Kangana, who have done incredible action and look amazing while doing it. It took them demanding that, it took a generation of actors before us to fight for it and that happens with every generation,” Priyanka Chopra said.
The ‘Barfi’ actress further said, “Today, you are seeing for example me as a lead on a show and I am doing stunts that you would see a hero do or action mounted where you would have seen a hero do. So watch it, make it easier for the next generation of actresses because now they aren’t scared. Filmmakers will say, ‘Oh, this can happen.’ Possibility is there.”
“When you have a new idea and you are pushing against a system, someone has to do it for the first time. One person does it, then four people do it. Suddenly it is a community,” she added.
Talking about Priyanka Chopra, she has made her mark in both Bollywood and Hollywood. Before making her Hollywood debut with the 2015 television series ‘Quantico’, the actress tried to showcase her singing talent with songs like ‘In My City’ and ‘Exotic', which also featured American rapper Pitbull.
She has starred in multiple Hollywood projects including ‘The Matrix Resurrections’, ‘Baywatch’, ‘Isn't It Romantic’, ‘A Kid Like Jake’ and ‘We Can Be Heroes’ to name a few.
She will next be seen in the Hollywood film ‘Love Again’ with Sam Heughan, Celine Dion. Nick Jonas has a cameo appearance in the movie.
The actress will also headline Russo Brothers' series ‘Citadel’, which is slated to release on April 28. The upcoming Amazon Prime Video series will also feature Richard Madden.
The actress will also be seen alongside Idris Elba and John Cena in ‘Heads Of State’.
She also has a Bollywood project in the pipeline. Priyanka Chopra will be starring alongside Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif in Farhan Akhtar's ‘Jee Le Zaraa’.
