“Don’t Have The Need To…”: Ranbir Kapoor On Being Labelled “Toxic” After Alia Bhatt’s Lipstick Remark
Ranbir Kapoor recently reacted to the criticism he received after Alia Bhatt revealed that he doesn’t like her wearing lipstick.
Ranbir Kapoor, who has a love-hate relationship with the internet, has been slammed by netizens on several occasions after his problematic statements surfaced online. From fat shaming his wife-actress Alia Bhatt while she was pregnant to publically criticising her bathroom habits, several past comments by the Bollywood actor have stirred controversy on the internet. Most recently, Alia Bhatt revealed that Ranbir Kapoor doesn’t like it when she wears lipstick and tells her to “wipe it off” because he likes her natural lip colour. This remark sparked outrage on social media, with Ranbir Kapoor receiving massive backlash.
Many even called Ranbir Kapoor a “toxic” partner and a walking “red flag”. The Bollywood actor, who is busy promoting his upcoming film ‘Animal’, recently interacted with his fans via Zoom.
While talking to his fans about a range of topics, he also broke his silence on the criticism he received after Alia Bhatt’s lipstick comment.
Ranbir Kapoor said, “Hey, I'm not on social media so I don’t have the need to deal with it which is a great thing. But I feel negativity is very important especially if you are an artist and if you have some work out there I think both need to exist because then that creates a balance. You know sometimes a lot of things are written about you as an actor, a lot of opinions are made which are not necessarily true and if you take it for a pinch of salt because this image of mine which has been created by the movies or the characters I play or by media is something that I don’t own."
He explained, “It’s owned by the public, it’s owned by people who like my work or dislike my work and they are allowed to say anything about me as long as they give my work a chance you know as long as I can prove to them as an actor and that has always been my focus - to act.”
Talking about the news pieces written about him, he said, "Recently, I was reading some article about being toxic and something relating to some statement I made and I understand this. And I am on the side of the people who are fighting for the toxic masculinity, if they use me as the face of it, it’s fine because their fight is bigger than just me feeling sad about them having an opinion about what I said. I look at a larger picture.”

In a video for Vogue in August 2023, Alia Bhatt almost wiped the lipstick off her lips because she wanted the faded look. She then explained, “Because one thing my husband…when he wasn't my husband but when he was my boyfriend as well… he would be like ‘wipe that off, wipe that off’ because he loves the natural colour of my lips.”
Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor got married in 2022 and have a daughter named Raha. She will turn 1 in November this year.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Ranbir Kapoor will be seen next in Sandeep Reddy Vanga's ‘Animal’, scheduled for release on December 1. Alia Bhatt is currently shooting for Vasan Bala's ‘Jigra’.
