Aamir Khan's 'Sitaare Zameen Par' will release on YouTube soon.

In an era where digital reach is transforming how we consume cinema, Aamir Khan is shifting away from OTT models. Taking a bold step in that direction, the Bollywood superstar has announced a new digital path for his latest film ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’. Directed by RS Prasanna and starring Aamir alongside Genelia D’Souza, the film hit theatres on June 20. If you missed it in theatres, you can now watch it on YouTube. The film will start streaming on YouTube from August 1, bypassing all major OTT platforms.

The move marks a significant shift in how mainstream cinema can be accessed globally. At a press conference held in Mumbai on Tuesday, Aamir revealed that the film will be available on YouTube for Rs 100 in India, with localised pricing for audiences in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Spain. Subtitles and language dubs will also be offered to maximise accessibility.

Calling it a culmination of a long-held dream, Aamir explained, “For the past 15 years, I have been struggling with the challenge of how to reach audiences who do not have geographical access to theatres, or those who are unable to make it to theatres for various reasons. Finally, the time for the perfect storm has come.”

Aamir credited the rise in UPI-based payments and widespread internet and YouTube access as enablers of this model.

He added, “With our government bringing in UPI and India becoming no 1 in the world in electronic payments, with internet penetration in India having grown dramatically and growing every day, and with YouTube being on most devices, we can finally reach vast sections of people in India, and a significant part of the world.”

He added that his ultimate goal is to make cinema easily available to all at an affordable price. “My dream is that cinema should reach everyone at a reasonable and affordable price. I want people to have the ease of watching cinema when they want, where they want. If this idea works, creative voices can tell different stories, breaking geographical and other barriers. This will also be a great opportunity for younger creative people entering the field of cinema. If this idea works, then I see this as a win-win for all,” Aamir said.

‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, considered a spiritual successor to Aamir’s 2007 hit ‘Taare Zameen Par’, tells the story of a basketball coach guiding a team of specially challenged players and introduces ten new faces.

The film is written by Divy Nidhi Sharma and produced under Aamir Khan Productions. It earned Rs 267 crore globally according to Sacnilk and received mixed reviews from critics.

Aamir is currently producing ‘Lahore 1947’ starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, and ‘Ek Din’, featuring his son Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi.
