Here's what Hansal Mehta had to say about the box office performance of ‘The Buckingham Murders’.

Kareena Kapoor Khan's thriller ‘The Buckingham Murders’, directed by Hansal Mehta, released in cinemas last Friday. The new movie opened to favourable reviews from the critics. However, it has not translated at the ticket counters as the film is yet to cross even the Rs 10 crore mark in India. In a new interview with DNA, director Hansal Mehta has finally opened up about the underwhelming box office performance of the film.

“I’ll be lying if I say I don’t (get nervous). I can afford to take a break now. Earlier, I couldn’t, so I used to hide. Now, before the film is releasing, I leave and cut off. It allows you to move on, or you get stuck,” Hansal Mehta said.

“It’s a tough balance. The PR firms don’t let me cut off that easily. What happens is that, unfortunately, we have made this a very short game, a weekend game. Whereas films, I believe, are for posterity. You can reflect in time. We don’t give it that time now,” he added.

Speaking further, Hansal Mehta said, “We reduce films to a number and I find that very demeaning to the work that you have done. People who have nothing to do with film and its investment become commentators and behave like stakeholders, without a holistic understanding of how films’ business model actually functions.”

Kareena Kapoor Khan's ‘The Buckingham Murders’ earned Rs 0.50 crore on Wednesday, the sixth day of its release. The total nett domestic collection of the film now stands at Rs 7.30 crore.

‘The Buckingham Murders’ had its world premiere at the 67th BFI London Film Festival on October 14, 2023. The movie follows the story of a British-Indian detective, who is coping with a personal tragedy while investigating the murder of a child in Buckinghamshire.

The movie also stars Ranveer Brar, Rukku Nahar, Ash Tandon, and Keith Allen in key roles.

Meanwhile, Kareena Kapoor will next be seen in Rohit Shetty’s ‘Singham Again’. The movie, co-starring Deepika Padukone, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Tiger Shroff, is set to release on Diwali 2024.
