Explained: Why Karan Johar Is At The Centre Of Big Bollywood Controversy Again
Karan Johar has been trending on social media for the past one week. Here is a explainer on why he is at the centre of a big controversy again.
Director and producer Karan Johar is a polarising figure, and for the past 2-3 years, he has attracted many negative views on social media. The director who has helmed movies like 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham', 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna', 'Student of the Year', 'My Name Is Khan' and 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', often finds himself in the middle of controversy and it is all because of the influence he enjoys within the Hindi film industry. Karan Johar is an influential figure within the Hindi film industry and he has launched the careers of many stars such as Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. His production house Dharma Productions often launches star kids, and it was the same company that launched Janhvi Kapoor with 'Dhadak'.
The director was targetted and trolled on social media in 2020 after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The actor allegedly died by suicide, and Karan Johar was targetted after some netizens pointed out how his production house had a problem with the actor.
Now three years after the Sushant Singh Rajput row, the producer and director is again in the eye of a storm and here is the chain of events.
It all started with Priyanka Chopra Jonas who made an appearance at US actor Dax Shepard's podcast 'Armchair Expert'. It was there that she revealed how she had beef with some people within Bollywood and that's the reason she moved to the West.
As soon as the comments were made, Kangana Ranaut targetted Karan Johar for allegedly sabotaging Priyanka Chopra's career in Bollywood.
For the unversed, it was rumoured that Shah Rukh Khan's wife Gauri Khan had a problem with the growing closeness of the 'Pathaan' star with Priyanka and this led to Karan Johar and some other members of the fraternity boycotting Priyanka Chopra, as claimed by many reports.
Amidst this entire episode, an old video also went viral on social media, in which Karan Johar can be seen saying how he wanted to "murder" Anushka Sharma's career when she was signed opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'. Karan revealed how he wanted Aditya Chopra to sign another leading actress.
Over the weekend, Karan Johar had also shared a cryptic note, saying: "Laga lo ilzaam, Hum jhukne waalon mein se nahi, Jhoot ka ban jao Ghulam, Hum bolne waalon mein se nahi, Jitna neecha dikhaoge, Jitne aarop lagaoge, Hum girne waalon mein se nahi, Humara karam humari Vijay hai, Aap utha lo talvaar, Hum marne waalon mein se nahi."
Kangana Ranaut has repeatedly targetted Karan Johar on the charges of nepotism and she also terms him as "film mafia". Kangana and Karan have been at loggerheads ever since the former made an appearance at 'Koffee With Karan'.
Back in the day, at the IIFA Awards, Karan Johar had also mocked Kangana Ranaut by shouting "nepotism rocks" with actors Varun Dhawan and Saif Ali Khan.
However, the backlash led to Karan Johar apologising for his behaviour and comments.
