2022 is about to come to an end, so, it is fitting we take a look at the biggest controversies that hampered the Hindi film industry this year. From Akshay Kumar promoting a pan masala brand and then taking a U-turn to Shah Rukh Khan's effigies being burnt over the costumes and choreography used in 'Besharam Rang' from Pathaan, 2022 saw it all. #BoycottBollywood made its presence felt on social media throughout the year and many movies felt the wrath of the fans, who regularly thought that Bollywood needs to up their game when it comes to original content.

Here is a look at some of the biggest controversies that emerged out of the Hindi film industry in 2022:

Uproar over 'Pathaan' song 'Besharam Rang'

'Pathaan' is slated to release in theatres on January 25, 2023 but the movie has started making headlines already. Ever since, the first song titled 'Besharam Rang' came out, Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan have been caught in the middle of a storm, where people have been criticising the costumes and choreography used in the song.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra urged the makers to change the costumes, else he said that the state government would contemplate whether the movie can be allowed to release in Madhya Pradesh or not. However, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone have also been supported by the likes of Asha Parekh, Prakash Raj, Swara Bhasker and many more actors.

Ranveer Singh's nude photoshoot

Ranveer Singh posed nude for the Paper Magazine and as soon as the pictures surfaced on social media, a huge uproar was created. A FIR was filed against Ranveer as he was accused of breaking obscenity laws. A petitioned argued that Ranveer Singh showed his private parts in a photo from the shoot, however Ranveer later clarified that the photo was morphed and it was not a part of the photoshoot.

IFFI Jury Head calls 'The Kashmir Files' a propaganda and vulgar film

During the International Film Festival of India, jury head Nadav Lapid criticised 'The Kashmir Files' at the closing ceremony and he went on to label the film as "vulgar" and "propaganda". Soon after his comments, the entire cast of the movie, including Anupam Kher hit back at Lapid. Vivek Agnihotri, the director of the movie challenged Napid to find factual faults with the movie and he declared that if any faults are found, he would quit filmmaking.

Akshay Kumar promoting Pan Masala brand

Pan masala brand ‘Vimal’ had hired Akshay Kumar as one of their brand ambassadors along with Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan. However, as soon as Akshay appeared in the ad, his fans were not at all pleased and old videos of him were found in which he had spoken against promoting gutka brands. This outrage led to Akshay withdrawing his association with the brand and he even apologised to his fans on social media.

Rampant #BoycottBollywood campaign on social media

The #BoycottBollywood trend just became bigger in 2022. Before the release of 'Laal Singh Chaddha', actor Aamir Khan had urged the fans to not boycott his movie, but the issue just became bigger after this. The call for boycott once again surfaced before the release of Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt's 'Brahmastra'. This outrage also forced Arjun Kapoor to speak up and in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, he said that the industry has tolerated a lot, and hence it is being considered as their weakness.

Controversial 'Kaali' poster

Filmmaker Leena Manimekalai’s documentary Kaali’s poster portrayed the goddess smoking while holding a pride flag. As soon as the poster was made public, FIRs were filed left, right and centre for hurting religious sentiments.

Sajid Khan's participation in 'Bigg Boss 16'

Director Sajid Khan is currently a participant of the hit reality TV show 'Bigg Boss 16'. It is important to note that the 'Humshakals' director was accused of sexual harassment in 2018 by several women and it is no surprise that his entry into Bigg Boss was criticised by many. Singer Sona Mohapatra and actor Ali Fazal also demanded that the director should be shown the exit door, however their calls were not answered.
