'Gadar 2' has collected a massive Rs 40 crore on the opening day. Here's how Akshay Kumar's 'OMG 2' fared at the box office.

Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma-starrer 'Gadar 2' is wreaking havoc at the box office as it collected Rs 40.10 crore on its opening day in the theatres, as per trade analyst Taran Adarsh. The film has recorded an overall occupancy of over 60 per cent on Day 1, while night shows accounted for a massive 86 per cent, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. With this, 'Gadar 2' has become the second-highest grosser of 2023 on Day 1 in India, however, it fell short of breaking Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Pathaan' as it had collected Rs 55 crore.

"#SunnyDeol unleashes his power… All pre-release calculations / estimations go for a toss… #Gadar2 RUNS RIOT at the #BO, is SENSATIONAL on Day 1… FLYING START all over… SECOND HIGHEST OPENER OF 2023… Fri ₹ 40.10 cr. #India biz. Mass sectors and single screens are on a record-smashing spree… Unlike *most* films - which have major contribution from the national chains [#PVR, #INOX, #Cinepolis] and barely 20% to 30% from mass sectors - #Gadar2 is simply historic in mass pockets. Now imagine its potential on #IndependenceDay big holiday [on Tue]," tweeted Taran Adarsh.

However, 'Gadar 2' managed to outperform 'Adipurush', which had debuted with Rs 32 crore.

On the other hand, 'OMG 2' starring Akshay Kumar, Yami Gautam and Pankaj Tripathi which also released in the theatres on Friday, has opened to a collection of Rs 10.26 crore, as per Taran Adarsh.

"#OMG2 fares much better than expected, although the numbers are severely impacted by #Gadar2 wave… Recorded better occupancy at prime multiplexes in evening and night shows, which should ensure solid growth over the weekend… Fri ₹ 10.26 cr. #India biz. #OMG2 is heavily dependent on word of mouth and this factor will decide where it lands in the coming days… The #IndependenceDay holiday [on Tue] will certainly boost its biz, but it needs to sustain beyond the big holiday to establish itself," tweeted Taran Adarsh.

The film had 37.53 per cent occupancy in Hindi across the country, as reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. 'OMG 2' has gotten good reviews from the critics, hence it is expected to witness a surge in collections over the weekend. However, 'Gadar 2' is expected to rule the box office over the coming days as well.

On Friday, even Salman Khan had extended his support to 'Gadar 2', and taking to Twitter, he wrote: "Dhai kilo ka haath equals chalis cr ki opening. Sunny paaji is killing it. Congrats to the entire team of Gadar 2."

'Gadar 2' has been directed by Anil Sharma and it stars Ameesha Patel, Utkarsh Sharma, Manish Wadhwa and Gaurav Chopra in the lead roles.

For the unversed, 'Gadar' had released on the same day as Aamir Khan's 'Lagaan', and the movie was set during the partition of India. The plot of the 2001 film revolved around Tara Singh, played by Sunny Deol, and how he fell in love with Sakina, a Pakistani girl, played by Ameesha Patel.

Talking about 'OMG 2', the movie also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam. The trailer's opening underlined that Akshay Kumar is not playing Lord Shiva, but a messenger of God. For the unversed, this was probably one of the directives given from the CBFC to the makers of the film.

'OMG 2' is a sequel to Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal's 2012 hit film 'OMG - Oh My God'.
