Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s ‘L2: Empuraan’ Shatters Records, Becomes Biggest Malayalam Opener Of All Time

Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s ‘L2: Empuraan’ becomes biggest Malayalam opener of all time.

‘L2: Empuraan’ has created history as the Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer has become the biggest Malayalam opener of all time. The film, which released in theatres on Thursday, March 27, minted Rs 22 crore, across all languages on the opening day of its release. Out of this Rs 22 crore, Rs 19 crore came from the Malayalam version, while the Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Kannada versions contributed Rs 1.2 crore, Rs 80 lakh, Rs 50 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively.

As per Sacnilk, the film had an overall occupancy of 43 per cent on Thursday. Before ‘L2: Empuraan’, the biggest Malayalam opener belonged to Prithviraj Sukumaran as his ‘Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life’ earned Rs 7.6 crore on the opening day of its release.

The third spot in the list is held by Mohanlal’s ‘Marakkar Lion of the Arabian Sea’, which made Rs 6.8 crore on its first day.

The opening day numbers of ‘L2: Empuraan’ further cement the rise of Malayalam cinema. Last year, several Malayalam films such as ‘Manjummel Boys’, ‘Premalu’ and ‘Aavesham’ achieved cult status, enjoying success all over the country.

‘Manjummel Boys’ became the biggest Malayalam hit of 2024 by minting more than Rs 140 crore at the domestic box office. ‘Aavesham’ and ‘Premalu’ made Rs 85 crore and Rs 75 crore, respectively, in India.

Unni Mukundan’s ‘Marco’ also earned more than Rs 60 crore at the box office. However, the film faced a lot of flak for its violent content.

Coming back to ‘L2: Empuraan’, the film has received mixed response from the critics and it is remains to be seen how the film fares over the weekend. It is the second installment in the 'Lucifer' trilogy and follows the events of its prequel 'Lucifer'.

The new Malayalam film also stars Abhimanyu Singh, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Andrea Tivadar, Jerome Flynn, Indrajith Sukumaran, Eriq Ebouaney, and Suraj Venjaramoodu.

The project has been directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, while it has been jointly produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Gokulam Gopalan, and A Subaskaran through Aashirvad Cinemas, Sree Gokulam Movies, and Lyca Productions, respectively.
