Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar 2’ Enters Rs 200 Crore Club, Akshay Kumar’s ‘OMG 2’ Storms Past Rs 70 Crore Mark On Independence Day 2023
Latest Bollywood Box Office Report: Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar 2' and Akshay Kumar’s 'OMG 2' continue to rake in the moolah, emerging as massive successes.
After Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ and Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ drew massive crowds to theatres and turned out to be huge successes globally, India had its own 'Barbenheimer' as 'Gadar 2' and 'OMG 2' – heavily trending as ‘OHMYGADAR2’, arrived in cinemas on August 11. And both the new Hindi movies are continuing their fine run at the domestic box office. On Independence Day 2023, Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel’s ‘Gadar 2’ collected 55.40 crore. Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi’s ‘OMG 2’ made Rs 17.10 crore.
The total box office collections of ‘Gadar 2’ and ‘OMG 2’ currently stands at Rs 228.98 crore and Rs 72.27 crore, respectively. It’s impressive for Akshay Kumar’s ‘OMG 2’ to cross the Rs 70 crore mark despite tough competition from Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar 2’.

For the unversed, ‘Gadar 2’, directed by Anil Sharma, also stars his son Utkarsh Sharma. Meanwhile, ‘OMG 2’ also features Yami Gautam in a prominent role.
The first ‘Gadar’, also directed by Anil Sharma, was a blockbuster in 2001, when it clashed against the acclaimed hit ‘Lagaan’, which starred Aamir Khan. It finished with Rs 130 crore at the global box office.
‘Gadar 2’ not just marks return of Ameesha Patel and Sunny Deol but also child actor Utkarsh Sharma. The latter is now 29 and plays Tara Singh and Sakeena's son in ‘Gadar 2’ as well.
It is set in the backdrop of the ‘Crush India’ campaign in 1971. It revolves around Tara Singh's efforts to free Charanjeet from Pakistan when he is captured by their army.
‘Gadar 2’ also stars Manish Wadhwa, Gaurav Chopra, Simrat Kaur, Luv Sinha, Rakesh Bedi and Dolly Bindra. The popular songs from the 2001 original, ‘Udd Jaa Kaale Kaava’ and ‘Main Nikla Gaddi Leke’ have been reprised in ‘Gadar 2’.
Talking about ‘OMG 2’, it has directed by Amit Rai and is a sequel to the hit 2012 film ‘OMG – Oh My God!’. The comedy drama delves into the subject of sex education in Indian schools but received an A (adults only) certificate from the censor board after 25 modifications. Coincidentally, there is a scene in ‘OMG 2’ featuring Akshay singing the ‘Gadar’ song ‘Udja Kale Kawan’.
Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ is also continuing to rake in the moolah. Despite tough competition from ‘Gadar 2’ and ‘OMG 2’, ‘RRKPK’ earned Rs 3.54 crore on Independence Day 2023, taking its total to Rs 137.02 crore.
